فماذاso what يَنفَعُbenefits العُمرُlife الطويلُlong
A long life in this world is short;
So what good is a lengthy lifetime?
وأحوالُand the conditions الفتىthe young man فيin الدَّهرِtime شَتَّىvaried
ولكنْbut أيُّwhich حالٍcondition لاnot تَحولُchanges
And a young man's fortunes through time are varied;
But what condition does not change?

لعلميbecause of my knowledge أنَّthat كُلَّهماboth of them يزولُvanishes
Wealth and poverty have come to mean little to me,
For I know that both pass away.
إذاif ظَفِرتْsecured يديmy hand بكَفافwith enough عَيْشٍa livelihood
فماذاso what بعدَهُbeyond it تلكَthose الفَضولُexcesses
If my hand secures enough to live on,
So what, beyond that, are those excesses worth?

رَضِيتَyou were content بمالهُwith what has فيهاin it حصولُattainment
The happiest living in this world is a life
In which you are content with what is attainable.

وليسَand there is no وراءَهاbehind them باعٌreach طويلُlong
And the most exhausting plight is lofty ambitions
With no long reach behind them.

And the most pleasing of all cups is any cup
Toward which its drinker's nature inclines.

And the finest thing to delight a friend
Is lines his friend has bestowed upon him.

Al-Husayn gave a gift to al-Hasan, so I said: this
Is a lovely gift the lovely one has brought you.

A noble man, from a noble man, from noble folk;
Their allotted share in glory never dwindles.

He meets us with a young man's face, but
Mature men fall short of his understanding.
وماand not صِغَرُsmallness الجُسومِbodies يَضُرُّharms شيئاًanything

And smallness of bodies does no harm at all
When minds grow great alongside it.

A generous soul beamed with noble deeds,
Like one whose sides wine has set dancing.

His is a gentleness that has grown so delicate
It almost flows over his sides.

He ranged widely in the sciences, so I said: fertile land;
And was expansive in speech, so I said: the Nile.

وليسَand there is no إلىto مَعارِجهِhis lofty heights سبيلُpath
There is a path to him whenever we wish,
But no path leads to his lofty heights.

وليسَand there is no لهُfor him بشنشنةٍfor any trait عَذولُa reproacher
He has someone to envy every trait,
But none to reproach him for any trait.

We saw a pearl strung in a necklace,
And it will become its central pearl.

We see proofs in him every day,
And for a judgment, it is enough that proof be presented.
