أجرَىset flowing أبوAbu (father of) الدَّيَّةِal-Dayya الخيَّاطُthe tailor مكرُمةًan act of generosity
أجرَى أبو الدَّيَّةِ الخيَّاطُ مكرُمةً
سبيلَa public supply ماءٍof water عليهِfor it الأجرُthe reward مقصودُsought
سبيلَ ماءٍ عليهِ الأجرُ مقصودُ
Abu al-Dayya the tailor, in an act of generosity, set flowing
The tailor Abu al-Dayya performed a noble deed
a public water supply, for which reward is sought.
By directing a water channel where payment was intended
ياO مَنهلاًwatering place قالَsaid بالتَّأريخِin the chronogram ناهِلُهُits drinker
يا مَنهلاً قالَ بالتَّأريخِ ناهِلُهُ
مِنamong شيمةِthe traits of الحَسَنِal-Hasan الإحسانُbeneficence والجودُand generosity
مِن شيمةِ الحَسَنِ الإحسانُ والجودُ
O watering place! Its drinker spoke this chronogram:
O you who quench thirst, he said in dating it, may its drawer
Beneficence and generosity are part of al-Hasan’s nature.
Be characterized by the virtue of benevolence and generosity
