If you have no skill in judging men,

then look at death: see how death judges.

It roams the earth among the people, seeking

a noble man among the people, yet is not content with what it finds.

A mighty hunter, it seeks the falcon, taking pride

in it; if it does not find it, the shrike satisfies it.

    وإن رَمَى السَّهْمَ فليَستهِدِفِ الكَبِدُ

    When it unsheathes its sword, the head is its destination;

and if it shoots the arrow, let the liver be its target.

O king whose presence is feared,

this is the king feared when he arrives.

O lion who wreaks havoc with his might

upon the predators of the wilderness—this is the lion.

O hero, bristling with weapons—I wonder:

where are the weapons, and what can chain mail ward off?

    إذا أتى الموتُ يوماً ماتتِ العُدَدُ

    The armaments you put your hopes in have betrayed your trust;

when death comes one day, the armaments die.

Every son of woman has, since his creation, remained

    prey trembling in death's hands.

O you who say "Tomorrow," leave off speaking of tomorrow,

for in this age no man has a tomorrow.

To death belongs every father who walked upon the dust,

and every mother, and all she raised, and all she bears.

Our return is to dust, from which we were fashioned,

just as hail returns to water.

We busy ourselves fattening bodies we pamper,

and the worms thank us for what we promise them.

A lamentation is under way in the dead man's home,

and a banquet throngs within the grave's abode.

Time has, in every eye, a tear that has fallen

on its account, and in every heart an ember burns.

Whenever you wish to count the unscathed, put

a zero on the page until a number appears.

I entrust to God the one who bade me farewell yesterday,

against his will; then patience and fortitude bade my heart farewell.

    فما لهُ صارَ عنا اليومَ يَنفرِدُ

    He long kept us company and brought us solace;

why, then, has he withdrawn from us today?

    وَيلاهُ حتَّى المنايا عِندَها الحَسَدُ

    Death contended with us for him out of envy;

    alas! Even Death harbors envy.

It assails us without a hand or an arm,

and neither our hand nor our arm can help.

A full moon has set in the east at midmorning—how strange!

so people saw in it something unlike what they had known.

Had the horizon's brilliant stars done him justice, they would not have risen,

out of grief for him, and sorrow would have veiled their horizon.

O resting place whose fortune is blessed,

has any resting place or land embraced one like the one you hold?

Honor—God be with you—the guest you have won,

for so often he honored guests when they arrived.

And know the majesty of one within you; they have recognized

his standing—the great among men and the pillars of society.

And guard every bone of his joints,

for that is held to be among the noblest relics.

O you who became drunk, though drunkenness was not your habit,

on a wine from whose intoxication no one has recovered.

I see you near me, not far away,

yet you are the farthest away of all who depart on earth.

What a sleep is yours, whose appointed term is Resurrection Day!

Woe is me! And what an absence, whose term is eternity!

What ails your eyes, with their ever-closed

lids, when the inflammation is in my eye, not theirs?

    فهل بِزادِ حُدِيثٍ منكَ نُفتَقَدُ

    This is the final look we are given as provision;

so will we be sought out with the sustenance of a few words from you?

And will our greeting be returned across the distance?

And will messages be conveyed to reach us?

You have risen, O lofty one, to a celestial sphere

above which your observations had long ranged.

You are the stranger; who can assure me we shall have

new marvels in the forms of elegy?

The rains poured generously upon your grave, weeping,

as though grief and misery had overtaken them.

This is the abiding home, and its provision

is the treasure, not wealth or children.
