Do not grieve, O soul, at death’s decree.

If it is what cannot be escaped, nor ransomed away.

grows worse the longer its course extends.

Away with it! No spell of its intoxication clears

before separation’s driver among us calls us away.

It is a dream in which a young man delights while sleeping,

in ignorance—then laughs tomorrow when he remembers it.

perhaps our own folk, perhaps even our enemies.

Among the marvels is that our preacher rises

to guide the servants of God, though he strayed and never found guidance.

The world has grown gray, and its age has grown gray with it,

yet death within it has remained forever young:

a sword that cleaves throughout the endless years,

never blunting, never complaining of nicks or rust.

True life is after death, in the everlasting abode,

not before it; thus death is counted as a birth.

among us, just as we choose—and it has done no wrong.

whose splendor made the stars themselves envious.

by the thief of death, a bold and lawless snatcher.

a home for him now reduced to one solitary half-line.

My night, in this loneliness, is long and black.

Could I have done so, I would have made lions my companions.

My grief for al-Naqqash, the finest of his age,

unfettered and accomplished in every art.

My grief for that slender branch; my grief for

the full moon in darkness; my grief for that sea of generosity.

Join my lament for him, O doves of the winding dunes,

and silence the nightingale whenever it begins to sing.

Weep for him, O clouds of morning,

on our behalf—for all our tears have been exhausted.

whose beauty once proclaimed it a sanctuary.

    Wail for him, O constellation

whose dearest companion he was whenever he joined its gathering.

and may dew water the earth of his grave in Tarsus.

    O polished, unsheathed sword,

how is it that I see you sheathed in earth?

I elegize you, yet I see you asking more than

my elegy—so I undertake the tribute anew.

Peace from us be upon you—but, I wonder,

is there anyone who can carry that repeated greeting to you?

Do you hear the caller answering your call,

or does only echo answer his cry?

We weep for you; but if you saw our weeping,

you yourself would weep for us, sighing deeply.

if time has left us any helping hand of yours.

What harm would it have done you to grant one glance

before farewell, that I might carry it as provision?

Why did you not send something to cool our longing—

a letter whose sight would quench our thirst?

Why do I see you failing to keep your appointed meeting,

when I have always known you never to break a promise?

I had been waiting for the bearer of glad tidings and reunion,

but suddenly your early mourner came instead.

you have become God’s neighbor in His heights forever.

Though you have vanished from sight, you have left, in the—

chronicle, a memory made immortal within all hearts.
