If he wears what lends him beauty,
the jewelry wears the whiteness of this neck.

O slender-waisted one, seen as a beloved,
do you blame a lover like me for wasting away?

You prepared the War of al-Basus for me, though I had not
prepared a Muhalhil to face you in battle.

You tried a second time to shed my blood with your eye;
in vain! My own eye had already shed it first.

And you plundered a heart containing nothing but love,
and stripped a body clad in nothing but decay.

on which I hasten to meet the illustrious sheikh.

And behold his subtle graces, with which the
poets have plundered poetic verses to sing of love.

The scholar, the great dignitary, the man of action, the
full moon, radiant and gleaming, lofty in eminence.

His sayings are pearls that minds wear as necklaces,
and his deeds are splendors with which necks are garlanded.

and fresher in bloom than the flowers of gardens,
and more exalted in station than the radiant stars.

And when he points toward the battalion, it flees in alarm,
as though his fingertips were among the tawny, slender lances.

He keeps the pens busy, though they, in describing him
among men, were already busy—and so grew busier still.

The poets vie for the surplus of his verse
in praising him, and fear that none will remain.

The qualities of Ahmad once overflowed upon me,
so I came upon an oncoming rain-cloud of them.
