في حضنِ إبراهيمَ سارةُ أصبحت
بكرٌa maiden بصَدْرِat the beginning of العامِthe year كانwas مَماتُهاher death
بكرٌ بصَدْرِ العامِ كان مَماتُها
Sarah has come to rest in Abraham’s bosom;
Sarah now rests in Abraham's bosom.
Early, at the opening of the year, came her death.
A maiden, she died at the year's beginning.
محمودةُpraised الأوصافِqualities بُستانيَّةٌa Bustani woman
محمودةُ الأوصافِ بُستانيَّةٌ
قدindeed صارَcame to be فيin روضِthe garden of الجِنانِParadise نَباتُهاher plant
قد صارَ في روضِ الجِنانِ نَباتُها
Praiseworthy in her qualities, a Bustāni woman,
Praised for her virtues, a Bustani,
Her plant has come to be in the meadow of Paradise.
Her plant now grows in the garden of Paradise.
لمّاwhen استعدَّتshe prepared herself للرَّحيلِfor departure تهلَّلتْshe beamed
لمّا استعدَّت للرَّحيلِ تهلَّلتْ
شوقاًout of longing إلىtoward دارٍan abode يدومُendures ثَباتُهاits permanence
شوقاً إلى دارٍ يدومُ ثَباتُها
When she made ready to depart, her face lit up,
When she prepared to depart, she beamed,
Longing for a home whose permanence endures.
Longing for an abode that stands forever.
قالتshe said مؤرِّخةًgiving a chronogram بحَسْبِin keeping with صَلاحِهاher righteousness
قالت مؤرِّخةً بحَسْبِ صَلاحِها
موتُthe death of النُّفوسِthe souls الصالحاتِrighteous حَياتُهاtheir life
موتُ النُّفوسِ الصالحاتِ حَياتُها
She said, marking the date in keeping with her righteousness:
She said, in a chronogram befitting her righteousness:
“The death of righteous souls is their life.”
The death of righteous souls is their life.
