Halt by the dwellings when the pitch-black night grows still,
Stop awhile at the abodes when dusk envelops,
And say, 'An outcast has sought refuge at the clan's fire.'
And say: An outcast wandered to the fire of separation.

You see the keen swords as meteors that give you light;
You will see swords flashing, illuminated by them.
And if Mayya appears, then dawn has already broken.
And if darkness appears, dawn has already emerged.

O dwelling of Mayya, may rain bless you, even if
O land of Mayyah, modesty has revived you, though
We have not sipped from you a drop that revives souls.
We have not sipped a refreshing drop from you.

If the people forbid my visits, they have not forbidden
If people prevent my leading, they did not prevent
My gazing at the encampment or breathing in its fragrance.
My gazing upon the living or inhaling the breeze.

Within you I have an enchantress for whom the faultfinder reproached me
You have in me a passion from which the sane does not abstain,
In ignorance; I said, 'He is blind, so he is blameless.'
So I said: he is blind, so no blame on him.

I deemed my eyes too noble, in pride after seeing her,
I honored my eyes out of arrogance after seeing her,
To look upon any other—even the full moon in the depths of night.
From seeing others, even the full moon in darkness.

A tender maiden with fragrant breath: when she chants rajaz,
A warmth whose gentle breath when it heaves
The gray doves sing liltingly for her amid their boughs.
Makes leaves rustle joyously on their branches.

Honey-sweet of mouth, with a gap between its pearls;
Her juicy mouth smiles revealing pearls within,
My strung tears vie in beauty with that gap.
My pouring tears compete with that smile.

I complained of the narrowness of that cruel eye;
I complained of the narrowness of that dark eye,
She said, 'When distress grows severe, await relief.'
It said: when tightness intensifies, wait for relief.

And if you wish to save your judgment from folly,
If you want salvation of opinion from foolishness,
Then go and call at the top of your voice, 'O Ibn Naja!'
Go and cry loudly: O son of deliverance!

That is the man whose heart is never startled by passion,
That one whom fervor does not perturb his mind,
And who never meets the coquettish gaze of the oryx-eyed beauties.
Nor looks at anything tempting, bent sideways.

That is he who loves the whiteness of pages, not the fair glow
That lover of the whiteness of pages, not sheep,
Of a cheek, and the blackness of ink, not the deep black of eyes.
And blackness of ink, not blackened pots.

That discerning imam, perfect and illustrious,
That leader, wise, perfect, learned, unique,
The peerless one, in whose character you see no crookedness.
Whom you see no crookedness in his manners.

Gathering all excellence in learning and in deed,
Gatherer of merit in knowledge and deed,
Both are united in him like two seas mingled together.
Integrated in him like two seas mixed together.

The days, humbled, weigh little upon his heart,
Days belittled themselves to him humbly,
For he knew what lay folded within them.
For he knew what was in their folds hidden.

So you never see him elated in prosperity,
So you see him not happy at luxury,
Nor do you see him disturbed in poverty.
Nor disgruntled at poverty.

Gentleness within dignity, his bearing unassailable,
Gentleness in dignity made his side lofty,
Like water mingled with wine in goblets.
Like water gently in cups blended.

And a lofty resolve, a remnant of the ages, has taken
A resolve that took the seven heavens to its ascent,
The seven layered heavens as steps to its sanctuary.
Step by step to its destination climbed.

His palm adorns the pages with pens;
His pen adorns the pages like embroidery,
So they are fair maidens in curtained chambers, wearing black beads.
As if they are fair cheeks wearing kohl.

Radiant al-Azhar has blossomed at his appearance,
Al-Azhar blossomed radiantly with his appearance,
Like the full moon risen from the heavens' eastern horizon.
Like the full moon emerging from horizon's dawn.

The sight of him is a mote in the eyes of his foes,
Meeting him is irritation in the eyes of fault-finders,
And his speech is a choking thorn in the breasts of the envious.
And his words are roughness in chests of enviers.

A mountain: you see him standing in Egypt's environs,
A towering figure whom you see his stance in Egypt's suburbs,
And his shade has been woven over Lebanon's hills.
And his shade woven in the meadows of Lebanon.
عَهدِيmy recollection بهاof it النِيلُthe Nile يَسقيwaters رِيفَهاits countryside تُرَعاًthrough canals

فصارَ آخَرُ يَسقي أرضَنا خُلُجا
As I recall it, the Nile waters its countryside through canals;
My covenant with it, the Nile waters its countryside lushly,
Then another began watering our land through branching channels.
So it became the last to water our barren land.

O Kaaba of learning, my foot has not made pilgrimage to you,
O Kaaba of knowledge, my feet did not make pilgrimage to you,
But my heart has spent years in your Khayf.
But my heart fulfilled pilgrimage in your sanctuary.

If goodness has indeed come from you singly,
If good has come from you singularly,
Then how often has goodness come from you in pairs!
Then good has come from you doubly.
