You have become—alas for you—present as one absent.
You have become absent though present

In Damascus with my family for you are not my companion

Men's hearts have captivated you, so you were not
Your charm has captivated men’s hearts but you were not
Among those stricken by eyes and eyebrows.
Smitten by eyes and eyebrows

You shared a draught, but not from a drinking companion's cup;
You offered but not with a drinking cup
And grew drunk, but not on a drinker's wine.
So you got drunk but not with a drinker’s wine

You tasted love unmixed; not every love
You tasted passion undiluted and not all passion
Affords a young man grounds for a faultfinder's reproach.
Does the youth find in it the way to blame

Love of the generous is honour for the lover
And the sought one's eminence is the seeker's glory.
And the brilliance of the sought is the seeker’s glory

The Ummayad pole star of his time has parted from you
Far away, yet in the guise of one near.
Though close in image to the intimate

Continuous traces followed his writings
They came like witnesses attesting to their writer's worth.
As testimony for the writer as clear as sunshine

Strung together by a penetrating mind's craft.
Arranged in a creation of penetrating mind

He praised beautifully one accustomed to hearing him
Of himself—but with praise befitting and due.

He praised as was deserved so it was as if
He had bestowed upon us virtues from his own self.
He gifted us from himself with virtues

Love keeps making it sit down and rise,
Passion still keeps it seated, makes it stand
Like a verb between jussive and subjunctive particles.
Like the verb between prefixes and suffixes

For return is the judgement on the usurper

Hearts have the rightful claim to love, for I see
The right of love is for hearts so I saw
A liar's glint upon the love of faces.
Love of faces over it a false glance

And if a brow comes before an eye
There is a heart no gatekeeper can turn back.
There a heart that cannot be averted by a brow

It is the black of a tattoo on a maiden's wrists.
Like black on the flanks of a wild doe

A virgin whom modesty holds back in awe,
A virgin, shyness makes her shrink in awe
While yearnings lead her as spare mounts are led.
And longing drives her like the driving of gazelles

What can a short one accomplish though he strain
At a distance where sleek, long-bodied steeds fall short?
In a range the arrows of Salih's bow shorten

So for you is beauty when you excuse and if you blame
Then you are right, and the blamed man has no complaint.
Then you have hit right and the blameless is not reproached
