I charged the east wind with carrying my greeting,

As though I had burdened it with some of the hills.

The wind does not carry mountains; would that I

Had charged it with carrying me, for I am like dust.

The place I would visit is far—no visit is possible; and often

Separation has deepened when I hoped to draw near.

Between me and my loved ones lies a sea of water; nearer still,

A sea of blood from tears that refuses to be crossed.

Indeed, I passed by the dwellings, and was stirred

By a sight before which I stood long in wonder.

I addressed them, hoping for an answer, for they

Have mingled with men's lifeblood as it poured forth.

Why has this age remained constant in separation,

While I have known it fickle in reunion?

    فَتراهُ يُخلِفُ كاذباً ومُكَذّبا

    Far from it! Time has no faithful pledge;

So you see it break its word, lying and belied.

Affliction defeated patience in its campaigns,

Having mustered a cavalcade of passionate longing.

And patience springs from hearts' resolve; yet there remains no

Untroubled heart for patience after separation's calamity.

The vicissitudes of time have frozen my poetic gift

With grief, and made me forget eloquent speech.

So I forgot how to compose letters, though a writer,

And forgot that I have been a writer since childhood.

O bright stars that have set in the west,

Away from us—I wonder, will you remain in the west?

Wandering, you never stand still; why is it that we,

Since you vanished, have seen no star of yours on any day?

There must come a day when Time devises for us

A new plan, even if the hands of Saba have toyed with us.

Far from it! Time has not died; it has only

Fallen asleep, and will then wake with its knee-bands tied.

There must come a day when Time devises for us

A new plan, even if the hands of Saba have toyed with us.

Far from it! Time has not died; it has only

Fallen asleep, and will then wake with its knee-bands tied.
