The eyes of the radiant stars opened,

And the souls of the nights awakened,

And wishes murmured in the dark,

And the wings of fancy fluttered.

Then flew in pursuit of beauty.

Then rise with us, O night companion of my soul,

Let us follow our wishes toward perfection.

Rise; let us take a wing for our hopes

That flies out of the world of limits.

Perhaps we shall see a path in the sky

Along which we travel and never return.

What we were denied in existence.

For death is better than stagnation.

Each day I have a new love,

    With neither union nor meeting.

Around me lie waters, sweet and palatable,

    But my heart remains unquenched.

If I wished one day, I would reap

Whatever I wished from the fruit of beauty.

But the soul's desire lies in a vision

That has appeared to the spirit in the sky.

I was cast down from them to an abode

Where the spirit has come to be imprisoned.

I wander in the night like a blind man

Who grew hungry and does not know how to beg.

A longing shakes me in the dark

For the union that has passed.

Is there a way to return?

Is there a path to attainment?

My soul yearns, and I cannot tell

Whether for the attainable or the impossible.

And the paths have strayed from the lost wanderer.

For it is the beginning of the path.

Look, for I have a secret in the lightning flashes,

Which the soul recognizes in the lightning flashes.

Do you not see the lightning as the fire of a caravan

That went before us along the road?

From a thousand ages and a thousand worlds,

They rose to the true watering place.

And reach the birthplace of sunrise.

When the soul and the heart are at odds?

    If a heart is indispensable,

Then let us remain on earth to suffer.

    If a heart is indispensable,

Then rise; let us search for the heart.

If it has eluded us or chosen concealment,

Let us seek guidance through sorrow and darkness.

When will you return, O breezes?

You stole my heart, and I may see it

Roaming through the worlds in your caravan.

To me, or will it go on wandering?

For a companionship that did not suit them.

    O heart, O little bird,

Trembling in the hand of life,

From it, so it may slake others' thirst with that blood.

And the dream willingly became captive,

    And my worry flew untethered.

So take us back, O night companion of my sorrow,

Let us be content on earth with fancy.
