1. رُويدَكِ شمسَ الحَياة

    ولا تُسرعي في الغُروب

    Take your time, O sun of life,

    And do not hasten to set.

  2. فما نالَ قلبي مُناه

    وما ذاقَ غيرَ الخُطوب

    For my heart has not attained its desire,

    And has tasted nothing but calamities.

  3. حَنانَيكَ داعي الرَحيل

    أنَمضي كذا مُرغَمِين

    Have mercy, O summoner of departure!

    Shall we depart thus, compelled,

  4. ولم نَروِ بعدُ الغلِيل

    فَمَهلا ودَعنا لِحِين

    Though we have not yet quenched our burning thirst?

    So slow down, and leave us for a while.

  5. أَتمضي الحياةُ سُدى

    وما طالَ فيها المَقام

    Does life pass in vain,

    Though our stay in it has not been long?

  6. ولم نَجتَز المُبتَدا

    فَسُرعانَ يأتي الخِتام

    And we have not passed the beginning,

    Yet so swiftly the end comes.

  7. أنَمضِي ولمّا نَنَل

    رَغائبَ نفسٍ طَموح

    Shall we depart, not yet having attained

    The desires of an aspiring soul?

  8. أنَقضِي ويقضِي الأمل

    وتَندَكُ تلك الصُروح

    Shall we perish, and hope perish,

    And those lofty edifices collapse?

  9. ألا فُسحةٌ في الآجَل

    ألا رَحمةٌ أو رَجاء

    Is there no leeway in the allotted span?

    Is there no mercy or hope?

  10. ألا مُهلةٌ أو بَدَل

    ألا عَفوَ عندَ القَضاء

    Is there no reprieve or alternative?

    Is there no pardon at judgment?

  11. حَنانَيكَ أينَ الذَهاب

    وأينَ مَصِيرُ النُفوس

    Have mercy! Where are we going?

    And where is the souls' destination?

  12. أنجتازُ هذا التُراب

    لنبلُغَ سُبلَ الشُموس

    Do we cross this dust

    To reach the paths of the suns?

  13. لماذا نَزَلنا بها

    وصِرنا عليها عبيد

    Why did we descend upon it,

    And become slaves upon it,

  14. اذا كان فوقَ السُهى

    مصيرُ النفوس العَتيد

    If above Suha lies

    The destiny awaiting souls?

  15. اذا كان قصد الصَمَد

    بذاك عِقابَ النُفوس

    If the Eternal One's purpose was

    To punish souls thereby,

  16. فما كان ذَنبُ الجَسَد

    ليغدو شرِيكَ البُؤوس

    Then what was the body's sin,

    That it should share in misery?

  17. بربِّكَ قُل يا دَليل

    إلى أين تُفضي الطريق

    By your Lord, tell me, O guide:

    Where does the road lead?

  18. فقد حارَ عقلي الكليل

    أمام الظلامِ المُحِيق

    For my weary mind has grown bewildered

    Before the enveloping darkness.

  19. سنترُكُ هذي الرُبوع

    كَشَمسٍ دَهاها الغِياب

    We shall leave these abodes

    Like a sun overtaken by its setting.

  20. وللشمسِ صُبحاً رُجوع

    أَليسَ لنا من إياب

    Yet the sun returns at dawn;

    Is there no return for us?

  21. أَنَمضي كذا جاهِلين

    حيارى مَطايا الأسَف

    Shall we depart thus, ignorant,

    Bewildered, sorrow's mounts,

  22. ويَبقى المَلا ذاهِلين

    فَطُوبى لعقلٍ عَرَف

    While the multitude remains dazed?

    So blessed is a mind that has understood!

  23. كفاكِ عَناً يا فِكر

    تَعِبتِ بلا طائلِ

    You have toiled enough, O thought;

    You have grown weary to no avail.

  24. فما نحنُ ألا أثر

    على الرملِ في السَاحِلِ

    For we are nothing but a trace

    On the sand along the shore.

  25. سنبقَى قليلاً هُنا

    إلى المَدِّ حتى يَعود

    We shall remain here a little while,

    Until the tide returns,

  26. فيَمضي سِراعاً بنا

    إلى البحر بحرِ الخُلود

    Then it carries us swiftly away

    To the sea, the sea of eternity.

  27. أشمسَ الحياةِ اغربي

    ولا تُمهليني لِغَد

    O sun of life, set,

    And grant me no respite till tomorrow.

  28. فما حاصلٌ مَطلَبي

    ولو طالَ عُمري الأبد

    For my wish will not be fulfilled,

    Even if my life lasted forever.

  29. أشمسَ الحياةِ اسرعي

    وغِيبي فأنتِ خَيال

    O sun of life, hasten,

    And vanish, for you are an illusion.

  30. أشمسَ الخُلودِ اسطَعي

    اليكِ اليكِ المآل

    O sun of eternity, shine!

    To you, to you is the final return!
