ياO نفسُsoul مالكwhat ails you والانينand moaning
تتألَّمينyou suffer وتُؤلمينand you cause pain
O soul, why this moaning?
O soul, why do you lament and cause me pain
You suffer and cause pain.
You have tormented my heart with yearning
عذَّبتِyou tormented قلبيmy heart بالحَنينwith longing
وكَتَمتِهِand concealed from it ماwhat تقصُدينyou intend
You have tormented my heart with longing,
And concealed what you intend
And hidden from it what you intend.
The lovers of passion have fallen asleep
قدalready نامَhave slept أربابُthe devotees الغرامof love
وتَدَثَّرواand they wrapped themselves لُحفَquilts السَّلامof peace
The devotees of love have fallen asleep,
Wrapped in blankets of peace
And wrapped themselves in quilts of peace.
Yet you, O soul, refuse to sleep
وأبيتِand you refused ياO نفسُsoul المَنامsleep
أفأنتِare you, then وحدَكِby yourself تشعُرينyou feel
Yet you, O soul, have refused sleep.
Do you alone feel?
Do you alone, then, feel?
The night has passed without you
الليلُnight مرَّpassed علىover سواكothers besides you
أفماhas not, then دهاهمbefallen them ماwhat دَهاكbefell you
Night has passed over others besides you;
Were you not overcome like the rest?
Has what befell you not befallen them?
Why then the defiance and turmoil
فلمwhy, then التمرُّدُrebellion والعِراكand strife
ماnot سُورُthe wall جسميof my body بالمَتينstrong
Why, then, this rebellion and strife?
My body is not fortified with metal
My body's wall is not strong.
You unleashed your wailing into the darkness
أطلقتِyou let loose نَوحَكyour lament للظلامinto the darkness
إيَّاكِbeware يَسمَعكِhear you الأنامhumankind
You let loose your lament into the darkness.
Take care the people hear you
Beware lest humankind hear you,
And think your moaning is the trumpet
فيَظُنَّand so may mistake زَفرَتكyour sigh النِّيامthe sleepers
بوقَthe trumpet النُشورِof resurrection ليومfor a day دِينof judgment
And the sleepers mistake your sigh
Calling for the day of judgement
For the resurrection trumpet on Judgment Day.
O soul why are you so troubled
ياO نفسsoul ماwhat لكails you فيin اضطِرابturmoil
كفريسةٍlike prey بينamong الذئابwolves
O soul, why are you in turmoil,
Like prey amidst wolves
Like prey among wolves?
Why not return to righteousness
هلاwhy not رجَعتِyou returned إلىالصوابto sound judgment
وبدلتِand you replaced رَيبَكِyour doubt باليقينwith certainty
Why not return to sound judgment,
And replace your doubts with certainty
And exchange your doubt for certainty?
A dove between the winds
أحمامةٌare you a dove بينamid الرياحthe winds
قدindeed ساقهاdrove her القدرُfate المُتاحallotted
Are you a dove amid the winds,
Fate has offered her openly
Driven onward by allotted fate,
Her wings are soaked by the rain
فابتلَّand so grew wet بالمطرwith rain الجَناحthe wing
ياO نفسُsoul ماwhat لكِails you ترجُفينyou tremble
Its wing grown wet with rain?
O soul why do you tremble so?
O soul, why are you trembling?
Does your sorrow have no relief
أوَماand is there no لحُزنِكِfor your grief منany بَراحrespite
حتىeven ولوeven if أزِفَdrew near الصَّباحmorning
And is there no respite from your grief,
Even if dawn approaches
Even if morning draws near?
If only your secret was shared
ياoh ليتif only سرِّكyour secret ليto me مُباحaccessible
فأعيso I may grasp صَدىthe echo ماwhat قدindeed تَعِينyou behold
Oh, if only your secret were open to me,
So I could understand your hidden pain
So I might grasp the echo of what you behold.
The spirits of darkness have tempted you
أسَبَتكِhave they captured you أرواحُspirits القَتامof dusty gloom
فأرَتكِand so showed you ماwhat خلفَbehind اللِّثامthe veil
Have the spirits of the dark haze taken you captive,
Showing you what's behind the veil
And shown you what lies behind the veil,
You craved what cannot be attained
فطمِعتِand so you longed فيfor ماwhat لاnot يرامcan be attained
ياO نفسُsoul كمhow much ذاthis تَطمَحينyou aspire
So you coveted what cannot be attained?
O soul, how high do you aspire?
O soul, how high you aspire!
You climbed the ride of ambition
أصعِدتِdid you ascend فيin رَكبِthe caravan النُّزوعof yearning
حتىuntil وصلتِyou reached إلىto الرُّبوعthe abodes
Did you ascend in the caravan of yearning,
Until you reached the meadows
Until you reached the abodes,
But then came the order to turn back
فأتاكِthen came to you أمرٌa command بالرُّجوعto return
أعلىis it over هُبوطكِyour descent تأسَفينyou grieve
Then receive a command to return?
Do you regret your descent?
Do you grieve over your descent?
Or does the old memory haunt you
أمor شاقَكstirred your longing الذِّكرُthe memory القديمold
ذكرُthe memory الحِمىof the sanctuary قبلَbefore السَديمthe nebula
Or did the old memory stir your longing,
The memory of passion before reason
The memory of the sanctuary before the nebula,
So you stand in the prison of the past
فوقَفتِso you stood فيin سِجنthe prison الأدِيمof skin
نحوtoward الحِمىthe sanctuary تتلفَّتينyou look back
So you stood in the prison of the flesh,
Glancing back towards desire
Looking back toward the sanctuary?
Did you release a thought into the sky?
أَأَضعتِdid you lose فِكراًa thought فيin الفَضاءspace
فتبعتهthen you followed it فوقَabove الهَواءthe air
Did you lose a thought in space,
And chase it high into the air
Then follow it above the air,
But it vanished and dissolved in the void
فنأىand so it receded وغلغلَand penetrated deeply فيinto العَلاءthe heights
فرَجَعتِso you returned ثَكلىbereaved of a child تَندُبينlamenting
Then it drew far away and penetrated the heights,
So you returned bereft, lamenting
So you returned bereaved, lamenting?
You took the path of fantasy
أسلكتِdid you travel فيin قُطرthe realm الخَيالof imagination
دَرباًa path يقودُthat leads إلىto المُحالthe impossible
Did you take, in the realm of imagination,
Leading to the impossible
A path that leads to the impossible,
So you unloaded your burden at
فحطَطتِthen you set down رَحلكِyour pack عندbeside آلa mirage
يَمتصُّsucks away رِيَّthe refreshment الصادرينof those leaving the water
Then set down your pack beside a mirage
Mirages that absorb the overflow of springs
That sucks the refreshment from those leaving the water,
You forgot your quest and yearning
فنسيتِso you forgot قصدكyour purpose والطِّلابand the quest
ووقَفتِand you stood يذهِلُكbewilders you السَّرابthe mirage
So you forgot your purpose and your quest,
Stopped by the illusion
And stood bewildered by the mirage,
Spilling the excess of clouds
وهرَقتِand you spilled فضلاتِthe remnants الوِطابof the waterskins
طمعاًcoveting بماءٍfor water تأمُلِينyou hope for
And spilled what remained in the waterskins,
Seeking water you hoped to find
Coveting water you hoped for,
Until when the sands grew harsh
حتىuntil إذاwhen اشتدَّgrew intense الأوامthirst
والآلُand the mirage أسفرcleared عنto reveal رُكامa heap of rubble
Until, when thirst grew fierce,
And the mirages revealed their ruin
And the mirage cleared to reveal a heap of rubble,
You buried your head like an ostrich
غيَّبتِyou hid رأسكyour head كالنَّعامlike ostriches
فيin رملthe sand قلبيof my heart تَحفرينyou burrow
You hid your head like an ostrich,
Digging in the sands of my heart
Burrowing in the sand of my heart?
You fell for your likeness in the sky
أعشِقتِdid you love مثلَكِone like you فيin السماءheaven
اختاًa sister تَحِنُّwho yearns الىfor اللقاءreunion
Did you love your counterpart in heaven,
A sister yearning for union
A sister yearning for reunion,
So you sat imprisoned by hope
فجلَستِso you sat فيin سجنِthe prison الرَّجاءof hope
نحوَtoward الأعاليthe heights تَنظُرِينyou gaze
So you sat in the prison of hope,
Gazing up hoping she'd look to you
Gazing toward the heights?
You waved with hand and cloak
لوحتِyou waved باليدwith the hand والرِّداءand the cloak
لتَراكِso she might see you لكنbut لاno رَجاءhope
You waved your hand and cloak,
For her to see you, but no hope
So she might see you, but there was no hope.
You didn't know you're in a cloak
لمnot تدرِshe knew أنكthat you فيin كِساءa garment
قدalready حِيكwas woven منfrom ماءٍwater وطِينand clay

She did not know you were in a garment
Woven of water and clay
Already woven of water and clay.
If life came between you two

Does life stand between you two?
Even if ordained by God
If God were to experience it,
He would weep for the humans He saw

رَحماًa womb يُصارعُهاhe struggles against it الجنِينthe unborn child
He would weep for the human he fashioned—
As a fetus struggling against the womb
A womb against which the unborn child struggles.
O soul, you have eternity
ياO نفسُsoul أنتyou لكyours is الخُلودimmortality
ومَصِيرُand the fate جسميof my body للحودto the graves
O soul, yours is immortality,
While my body is destined for worms
And my body is destined for the graves.
Maggots will feast on your eyes

فدعىso leave لهfor them ماwhat تَنخرِينyou gnaw away
Worms will ravage your eye within it;
So leave it be and cease your digging
So leave them what you are gnawing away.
O soul, do you enjoy separation?
ياO نفسsoul هلwould لكyou care فيfor الفِصالseparation
فالجسمُfor the body أعياهhas exhausted it الوِصالunion
O soul, would you consent to separation?
For the body is exhausted by union
For union has exhausted the body.
You burdened it with mountains

ورَذَلتِهand you despised it لاnot تَحفِلِينyou care
You burdened it with the weight of mountains,
Humiliating it, caring not
And despised it, without a care.
Thirst, hunger, burning yearning

اسفٌregret وحزنٌand grief واحتراقand burning
Thirst, hunger, and longing;
Regret, sorrow, inner fire
Regret, grief, and burning.
Woe is me, is this life bearable?

نَزَعاتُthe urges نَفسٍof a soul لاnot تِلِينit yields
Alas for my life! Can one endure
The whims of a soul that's unrelenting
The urges of a soul that will not yield?
My heart - how sorry I am for it
والقلبُand the heart واalas أسفيmy sorrow عليهfor it
كالطِفلِlike a child يَبسطit stretches out ليto me يَدَيهits two hands
And the heart—alas, my sorrow for it!—
Like a child stretching its hands to me
Like a child, it holds out both hands to me.
Why not extend a hand to it
هلاwhy not مدَدتِyou extended يداًa hand اليهto it
كالأمَّهاتِlike mothers إلىtoward البنينthe sons
Why not reach out a hand to it,
Like a mother to her son?
As mothers do toward their sons?
You weaned it off milk
غذَّيتهyou fed it مُرَّthe bitterness الفِطامof weaning
وحرمتهand you deprived it ذَوقَthe taste الغَرامof love
You fed it the bitterness of weaning,
Denied it the taste of passion
And denied it the taste of love,
Made an old man of a boy
وصنعتِand you made شيخاًan old man منfrom غُلامa boy
يَحبوit crawls علىat بابِthe door السِّنِينof the years
And made an old man out of a boy,
Who crawls at the doorstep of years
Crawling at the doorway of the years.
It became like a digger of graves

يَئِدُburies alive العَواطفَemotions فيin الصُّدورbreasts
So it became like a gravedigger,
Smothering feelings in hearts
Burying emotions alive within breasts,
Spending nights shrieking of ruins
ويَبيتُand spends the night يَهتِفُcrying out بالثُّبورfor doom
يَشكوcomplains اليكto you وَتشمتِينand you gloat
And spending nights crying out for doom.
Complaining to you while you gloat
It complains to you, and you gloat.

Blind, pierced by sorrows,
Whose wounds have become eyes
And its wounds have become eyes,
With which he sees the roads of death

فيسيرso it walks سَيرَthe gait الظافرينof victors

And through them it sees the paths of death,
Walking like those destined to win
So it walks with the stride of victors,

And it returns blind, led
By the moan of ardent craving
By the ringing of longing's cane.

It gropes for the distant light,
With fingers of scattered thought
With the fingertips of wandering thought,
And a stream of poetry flows from his mouth

And song pours from its mouth,
Like blood from the wounded
As blood streams from one who has been stabbed.

Have you seen the spider's house,
And a fly dying in it?
And a fly dying within it,
It danced to the tune of silence

Dancing to the melody of silence,
Painfully, but no wailing cured the agony
In pain, but its buzzing did no good?
Thus is my heart in your trap of hope

So, too, in the snare of hope,
It enjoys only dirges, not joyful song
My heart finds delight in singing.
That's no melody, but elegy
ماnot ذاكَthat شَدواًsinging بلbut رثاءa lament

That is no song, but a lament,
Mourning the buried dream
Through which buried hope weeps.

And on your shirt is some of the blood
What will you do then?
Of my heart—what will you do?
You sacrificed my heart in your quest

You sacrificed my heart to arrive,
Rushing to ascend
And hurried, seeking an audience.

Then, when you are summoned to enter,
With which eye will you enter?
With what eyes, then, will you enter?
