شَرِبتُI drank كأسيmy cup أمامbefore نفسيmy soul
شَرِبتُ كأسي أمام نفسي

وقلتُ يا نفسُ ما المَرام
I drank from my cup before myself,
I drank my cup in my soul's presence,
And said, “O soul, what is our aim?
And said: O soul, what is the goal?
حياةُa life شَكٍّdoubt وموتُand a death شكٍّdoubt
حياةُ شَكٍّ وموتُ شكٍّ

فلنَغمُرِ الشَكَّ بالمُدام
A life of doubt and a death of doubt—
A life of doubt, and a death of doubt;
Then let us drown doubt in wine.”
So let us drown doubt in wine.

Our hopes flashed brightly, then vanished,
Our hopes sparkled, then vanished,
Like a mirage that left us only thirst.
Like a mirage that left us with burning thirst.

Never mind: life is nothing but
No matter; life is nothing but
A stage whose beginning is its end.
A stage whose beginning is an end.

My sorrow blows from the north.
My sorrow blows from the north.

Except sorrow, which weariness stirs.
Except sorrow, which weariness has stirred.

My heart groans for a beloved,
My heart moans for my beloved,
Yet no beloved exists but imagination.
And there is no beloved but a phantom.
ياO نفسُsoul صَبراًbe patient علىthrough البَلاياafflictions

O soul, be patient through afflictions:
O soul, be patient through afflictions,
Everything must pass away.
For everything is bound to vanish.

I took myself to a physician
I took my soul to my physician,
And said, “Physician, what is the cure?”
And said: O doctor, what is the cure?

He set about treating my body's sickness,
So he began to treat my body's illness,
Supposing the illness lay in its humors.
And thought the disease lay in my constitution.

I said, “My friend, my oil has run dry;
So I said: O friend, my oil has dried up;
You test the lamp in vain.
In vain, then, you mend the lamp.

When the light has died within the radiant lamp,
If the light has faded in the radiant stars,
What use, do you think, can the glass be?”
What use, do you think, is the glass?

I journeyed on, my heart in tumult;
And I walked, with my heart for company,
We followed a passion that had passed through the dust storm.
Pursuing a love that passed through swirling dust.

While the heart, barefoot, walks slowly
Over shards of glass.
On shards of glass.

I searched for my heart but could not find it:
I sought my heart but did not find it;
Had it died, or lost its way in the wilds?
Had it died, or gone astray in the mountain passes?

And I returned toward humankind, alone,
Driven by reason's scourging lash.
Reason driving me with whips.

So I cried: O people, my heart has died,
Still an infant, still in swaddling clothes.
A child, still in swaddling bands.

Will you accept me without a heart?
They said, “Has madness touched you?”
They said: Has madness touched you?

Have been trampled among us along the path!

My Lord, how many the victims!
They died in the crush along the ways.
They died in the crush upon the roads.

All humankind is a majestic procession
All humankind is a solemn procession,
Moving through the funeral of hearts.
Moving in a funeral for hearts.

They walk, the grave within them,
And blood runs from their wounds.
And blood flows from their scars.

No others like them pay any price;
It is not their dead they hold in high esteem,
The dead man's blood-money lies in pockets.
But the dead one's blood money in their pockets.

O soul, have mercy! Where shall we go?
Nothing lies before me but graves.
For before me there are only graves.

Reason has imposed a wretched life upon you,
Reason has already burdened you, as a brute would,
Burdening you with what you cannot bear.
With things you cannot bear.

So let us leave reason where it wishes,
For reason possesses no feeling.
For reason has no feeling.

Will you abandon humankind in such a way
And burn the bridges after leaving them?”
That afterward we burn the bridges?

Then the soul cried out at me and said:
“What have I to do with people and their crowds?”
What have I to do with people and the crowd?

For no dwelling can compare with the forest.
For there is no abode like the forest.

O forest, we have come to you to strip bare,
My soul and I, with nothing forbidden.
My soul and I—and there is no sin.

Of us, if it knows how to speak well.

What the great trees mean by their rustling?

Its clustered grove grows green again.
The tangled growth of its trees turns green.

They would travel where there is no autumn.

O soul, the rustling is a riddle
Understood by the sun and clouds.
That the sun and clouds understand.

That is no complaint, but a secret whisper
From the earth's depths within the soil:
From the earth's depths, within the soil.

The whisper of roots that ache with longing
For more than watering and drink,
For something other than watering and drink.

By the memory of suns that never set.

Hidden, their mass immense.
Hidden, their bulk immense.

In them lies the life of the boughs, yet
Among humankind they are deemed of little worth.
To humankind their importance is small.

They would behold what eyes cannot see.
They would behold what eyes do not see.

How many a sighted person does not see, while a blind one
Can see and know what is to be.
Sees and knows what comes to be!

Except when they open their eyelids.
