Palestine, from a fettered exile,
Palestine in exile firmly shackled
we watch you in your engulfing distress.
We sympathize in overwhelming sorrow
فَتَعلُوso rise وتهبُطُand fall منّاof ours الصُدورُthe chests

So our chests rise and fall,
Rising and falling within us the chests
and we yearn, our eyes cast down.
Sighing while downcast are our sights

From behind this distant commotion
we salute you with a searing tear.

Your struggle struck fire from the flints of souls,
Your struggle lit the wicks of souls
so their spark flew, flashing.
So its sparks flared illuminating

A struggle with which you filled East and West,
A struggle filling the pulsating hearts
so the oppressive power was hard-pressed by it.
Straining the exhausted strength

And inscribed its verses in eternity
with the extinguished lives of your sons.
With the souls of your murdered children

Palestine, how many a sleepless soul among us—
Palestine how sleepless we are among us
with but part of the calamity keeping him awake—
Some of the misery - how violent it gets

we would fear that the tears might drown it.
We'd fear the tears would sink them
