ياO رَفيقيmy companion علىon طرِيقthe path of الحَزانيthe sorrowful
سِرwalk on فإِنَّfor indeed القَضاءfate أَقصىthe furthest extent of مَداناour reach
O my companion on the path of the sorrowful,
O my companion on the road of sorrows
Walk on, for fate is our furthest limit.
Walk on, for fate has marked the farthest bounds
سِرwalk بناwith us نَقطَعُwe may cover شَوطاًa stretch
قبلَbefore أنthat تَفنىfade away اللَياليthe nights
Walk with us; let us cover a stretch,
Walk on, let us traverse a distance
Before the nights fade away.
Before the nights fade away
طالَhas grown long هذاthis الدَربُroad
والعُمرُand life قَصيرٌshort فيon المَجالِthe course
This road has grown long,
Long is this road
And life is short upon the course.
And life is short in scope
قَدindeed تَعِبناwe have grown weary وَضَلِلناand we have lost our way
فيon أحاديرِthe descending slopes of المُحالِthe impossible
We have grown weary and lost our way
We grew tired and lost
On the descending slopes of the impossible.
In the ravines of dreams
وسَرَيناand we journeyed by night ودَلَجناand we traveled by night
خَلفَbehind أَظعانِthe caravans of الخَيالِimagination
And we journeyed by night and traveled in darkness,
We walked and waded
Behind the caravans of imagination.
Behind the specters of imagination
وَظَفِرناand we attained بِوصالٍunion
وحَظيناand we were favored بِجَمالِwith beauty
And we attained union,
And found union
And were favored with beauty,
And enjoyed beauty
فَكرِهاso they both loathed كلَّevery حالٍstate
طَمَعاًout of longing فيfor غيرa different حالِstate
So both loathed every state,
So we disliked every state
Longing for a different state.
Yearning for another state
ثمthen صِرناwe became بينَbetween هاتِيكَthat one
وهذِيand this one لاnot نُباليwe care
Then we became, between that state
Then we came between these
And this one, indifferent.
And those, and cared not
نَحمِلُwe bear الحُزنَsorrow شِعاراًas an emblem
لشَقاءof suffering واحتِمالِand endurance
We bear sorrow as an emblem
We carry sorrow as our banner
Of suffering and endurance.
For wretchedness and endurance
وكَتَمناand we hid عنfrom الوَرىhumankind شَكواناour complaint
كيفَhow نَشكوwe complain ولاand no سَميعَlistener سِواناother than ourselves
And we hid our complaint from humankind.
And from people we hid our complaints
How can we complain, with no listener but ourselves?
For whom to complain, and who would listen?
لكَyou have قَلبٌa heart مثلُlike قلبيmy heart
طامحٌaspiring يَسموit soars ويَهوَىand it loves
You have a heart like mine,
You have a heart like mine
Aspiring, it soars and loves;
Aspiring, rising high
ليسَdoes not يَجنيit reaps مِنfrom طُموحٍaspiration
غيرَanything but أوصابٍpains وبَلوىand affliction
It reaps nothing from aspiration
But reaps from ambition
But pains and affliction.
Only calamities and trials
كَمhow often حَظِيناwe found favor فَوَجَدناonly to find
أَلماًpain ماwhat كانhad been حَظوَاfavor
How often we found favor, only to discover
How much we found fortune
Pain in what had been favor.
Yet it brought but pain
كَمhow often شَرِبناwe drank كمhow often أكلناwe ate
خُبزَناour bread مُرّاًbitter وَحُلواand sweet
How often we drank, how often we ate
How much bread we ate
Our bread, bitter and sweet.
At times bitter, at times sweet
