وماand never كناwe were نؤملwe hoped for منfrom أميرan emir
كماas كناwe were نؤملwe hoped for منfrom يزيدYazid
We never hoped for as much from any emir
We had not hoped for such a prince
As we hoped for from Yazid.
As we had hoped of Yazid,
فاخطأbut proved mistaken ظنناour expectation فيهof him وقدماand long ago
زهدناwe shunned فيin معاشرةassociating with الزهيدthe miser
But our expectations of him proved mistaken, and long ago
So our hopes in him were disappointed,
We shunned the company of the miser.
And we grew weary of the ascetic's company,
إذاif لمnot يعطناhe gives us نصفاfair treatment أميرan emir
مشيناwe walked نحوهtoward him مثلlike الأسودthe lions
If an emir does not grant us fair treatment,
If a prince would not give us half.
We walk toward him like lions.
We strode towards him like lions,
فمهلاso hold ياO يزيدYazid أنبturn back اليناto us
ودعناand spare us منfrom معاشرةassociating with العبيدthe slaves
So hold, O Yazid; turn back to us,
So wait, O Yazid, and turn to us,
And spare us the company of slaves.
And leave us not with slaves' company.
نجىءwe come فلاyet not نرىwe see إلاexcept صدوداrejection
علىdespite أناthat we نسلمwe offer greetings منfrom بعيدafar
We come, yet see nothing but rejection,
We come but find naught but rejection,
Though we offer greetings from afar.
Though we greet from afar,
ونرجعand we return خائبينdisappointed بلاwithout نوالa gift
فماso what بالthe reason for التجهمthe scowling والصدودand rejection
And we return disappointed, without a gift—
And return disappointed, with no gain.
So why the scowling and rejection?
Why then the frowning and rejection?
