عتبانʿItbān قدindeed كنتI was امرءاa man ليI had جانبa strong flank
I was bereaved of you والجدودand fortunes تضعضعcrumble
ʿItbān, I once was a man with a strong flank,
Reproach, once you were a companion to me,
Until I was bereaved of you—and fortunes crumble.
Until I abandoned you though old friends wavered.
قدindeed كنتI was أشوسhaughty فيin المقامةthe assembly سادراheedless
فنظرتthen I looked قصديstraight ahead of me واستقامand straightened الأخدعthe neck-vein
I once stood haughty in the assembly, heedless;
Once I conversed freely at gatherings,
Then I looked straight ahead, and my neck-vein straightened.
But I watched my aims and I straightened the crooked.
وفقدتand I lost إخوانيmy brothers الذينwho بعيشهمthrough their being alive
قدindeed كنتI was أعطيI give ماwhatever أشاءI wish وامنعand I withhold
And I lost my brothers, through whose living presence
And I lost brothers whose life
I could give whatever I wished, and withhold.
Allowed me to give what I wished and deny.
فلمنso to whom أقولshall I say إذاwhen تلمstrikes ملمةa calamity
أرنيguide me برأيكwith your counsel أمor إلىto منwhom أفزعI turn for help
So to whom shall I say, when a calamity strikes,
So to whom shall I speak when disaster strikes?
“Guide me with your counsel”—or to whom shall I turn for help?
Show me your view! Or to whom shall I flee?
فليأتينfor it will surely come عليكupon you يومa day مرةsometime

For one day will surely come upon you
May a day come upon you once
When someone weeps for you, head veiled, and you cannot hear.
When one weeps over you, muffled, though you cannot hear.
