Turn aside and greet the traces of Nu'm's dwelling.

What do you greet there—a camp trench and stones?

It lay empty, deserted by Nu'm, and was altered

by wild winds bearing airborne, swirling dust.

I stood there at midday, questioning it

about Nu'm's household, on a trusty camel fit for journeys.

But Nu'm's dwelling stayed mute, not speaking to us.

And the dwelling, if it spoke to us, would be full of stories.

I found nothing there to which I could turn

except thumam grass, and except the hearth.

And I still see myself and Nu'm carefree there,

while time and life had not thought of turning bitter.

In the days when Nu'm confided in me, and I in her

what I concealed from people of my needs and secrets.

Were it not for snares from Nu'm in which I was caught,

my heart would have turned from her completely.

    وَالمَرءُ يُخلِقُ طَوراً بَعدَ أَطوارِ

    If it has come to its senses, its blindness lasted long;

and a man grows worn, stage after stage.

    سَقياً وَرَعياً لِذاكَ العاتِبِ الزاري

    I was told that Nu'm was reproachful over our estrangement;

may rain and care bless that reproachful, censuring one!

I saw Nu'm while my companions were in haste,

and the pale camels had been saddled for departure.

My heart was startled; it was a glimpse that appeared

for an instant, as destiny met destiny.

Fair as the sun appearing on its happiest day,

she harmed no kinsfolk, nor spoke foully to a neighbor.

After wearing only her mantle, she winds her waistcloth

in folds around hips like a crumbling mound of sand.

Perfume grows more fragrant for being upon her,

on the neck of a radiant-cheeked woman, lavishly perfumed.

She gives her bedmate drink, when he asks, from a mouth with notched teeth,

sweet to taste after sleep, intoxicating.

As though pure wine, cooled by the north wind, were in her saliva

    after her sleep—or a honey-gatherer's comb-honey.

I say, as the last of the stars have leaned

toward setting: Pause for a look, Harith!

Was it a flash of lightning's radiance my eyes saw,

or Nu'm's face appearing to me, or the glow of a fire?

No—Nu'm's face appeared while the night was thickly dark,

and shone from between garments and curtains.

Indeed, the women borne in litters who departed at midday

follow every foolish-minded, fiercely jealous man:

tender women, like eggs at a bend in the dunes,

rousing the male ostrich in him on a crumbling sand ridge.

When the ash-gray doves sing, they stir my longing,

even though I have wandered far from her, Umm 'Ammar.

And many a distant wilderness where wolves howl,

its waters far from water-seekers, desolate,

I crossed on a sturdy she-camel, deftly negotiating

rough roads, lean-bodied over rugged ground.

She crosses from land to land with a loud-voiced man,

bold amid dangers, a guide who never loses his way.

When the caravan's mounts grow weary and fall behind her,

she proudly raises her long-jointed, swishing tail.

It is as though her saddle were above a streaked wild bull,

restless in seeking pasture, always watching distant shapes,

driven away, his mates parted from him,

from the wild beasts of Wajrah, or of Dhu Qar.

Seasoned, solitary, sturdy; readily at hand for him was

herbage nourished by rain, the earliest autumn showers.

His upper body, apart from his breast, was brilliant white,

and on his legs were marks like tattoos in pitch.

A gray night passed over him, lashing him

with grit-bearing wind, amid scattered clouds and rain.

He spent the night as an arta bush's guest, driven

to it at dark by a downpour passing through the night.

Until, when the darkness of his night cleared,

and dawn brightened around him in fullest light,

a hunter bore down on him, running with his hounds,

with bony knuckles, one of Anmar's hunters.

Hunting's sworn companion, a tireless gatherer of meat for himself,

he wore no clothes except tattered rags.

He runs with droop-eared hounds, worn down till lean

by his long journeys with them and ceaseless roaming.

Until, when the bull, after fleeing, gave him an opening,

he urged on and loosed droop-eared hounds, all trained to hunt.

He charged back, too proud to flee, as

a defender charges to guard his honor, fearing disgrace.

With his horn he pierced the first one's chest,

as a vessel-mender pins broken piece to broken piece.

Then he turned on the second and killed it outright,

with a deep, gaping wound spouting blood.

And he felled the remaining third hound with a piercing thrust,

from a fierce fighter, skilled in thrusting, charging again and again.

Amid seven of them that had caught up with him, he kept

charging with his horn, like a horseman's charge.

Until, when he had achieved his purpose against them,

and had turned among them, advancing and retreating,

he shot away like a pearl-bright star, darting forth,

rushing on, mingling a canter with a gallop.

Such is my young she-camel's likeness, when wearied by

long night travel, and night travel after journeys.
