ياعامِO ʿĀmir لَمnot أَعرِفكَI knew you تَنكِرُyou disown سُنَّةًa custom
بَعدَafter الَّذينَthose who تَتابَعواfollowed one another بِالمَرصَدِat al-Marṣad
O ʿĀmir, I never knew you to disown a custom
O year, why do I not recognize you rejecting the tradition
After those who followed one another at al-Marṣad.
After those who followed one another in succession?
لَوif عايَنَتكَhad seen you كُماتُناour armored warriors بِطُوالَةٍat Ṭuwāla
بِالحَزوَرِيَّةِat al-Ḥazwariyya أَوor بِلابَةِon the lava field of ضَرغَدِḌarghad
If our armored warriors had seen you at Ṭuwāla,
If our blind ones had seen you in endurance
At al-Ḥazwariyya, or on the lava field of Ḍarghad,
In al-Hazuriyyah or in the plain of Dharghad,
لَثَوَيتَyou would surely have lain فيin قِدٍّa leather thong هُنالِكَthere موثَقاًsecurely bound
فيamong القَومِthe men أَوor لَثَوَيتَyou would surely have lain غَيرَnot مُوَسَّدِprovided with a pillow
You would have lain there, securely bound in a leather thong,
You would have lain bound there with chains
Among the men—or you would have lain without a pillow.
Among the people, or you would have lain with no pillow.
