May it gladden the sons of Dhubyan that their lands

have been left to them, free of every ally and follower,

save Asad, who guard them at every sunrise,

with two thousand warriors, armed and clad in mail,

mounted on the offspring of al-Wajih and Lahiq,

    training their yearlings with whips.

They brandish spears whose shafts are long,

with long hands, bare at the knuckles.

So leave alone a people beyond reproach:

they drove 'Abs into the rugged, stony land.

And before them, in their hands, had proved obstinate

Banu 'Amir, like unyielding pregnant she-camels.

So I place no hope in Sahm, nor in Nasr of Malik,

nor in their ally 'Abd ibn Sa'd.

When they camp at Dhu Darghad, then at 'Uta'id,

the croaking of frogs serenades them there,

sitting beside their tents, draining its water—

may God strike at those cringing noses!
