يُريدُ بَني حُنَّ بِبُرقَةِ صادِرِ
Indeed, I told al-Nu‘mān on the day I met him,
I said to Nu'man when I met him,
As he sought Banū Ḥunn at Burqat Ṣādir:
He wants to attack Bani Hunn in Burqah,
تَجَنَّبavoid بَنيthe sons of حُنَّḤunn فَإِنَّfor indeed لِقائَهُمmeeting them
تَجَنَّب بَني حُنَّ فَإِنَّ لِقائَهُم
كَريهٌdreadful وَإِنand even if لَمnot تَلقَyou encounter إِلّاexcept بِصابِرِwith a steadfast fighter
كَريهٌ وَإِن لَم تَلقَ إِلّا بِصابِرِ
Avoid Banū Ḥunn, for meeting them
Avoid Bani Hunn for meeting them is hateful,
Is dreadful, even if you encounter only one steadfast fighter.
Even if you meet only the patient among them.

The sons of ‘Udhra take mighty mouthfuls; they
O Allah, children of Udhrah are fierce,
Are mighty chiefs, gulping them down their throats.
They grab it with their throats.

And they defended Wādī al-Qurā against their enemy
They prevented the enemy from Wadi al-Qura
With a host that destroys the enemy who vies in numbers—
With a large, experienced army against the arrogant enemy.

Through their bases before the daggers draw water:
With their chests before the throats.

It is the wool of a ram that has shed its coat.

Small date fruits stored whose peel
Fly off when other date-skins fly away from them.
Flies off like birds when the date peels off.

They drove Balī from it, and so
They were driven away from it with affliction, so it became
Balī found itself in a low-lying valley of Tihāmah.
Affliction in a valley of Tihama lying hidden.

And they defended it against all of Quḍā‘ah,
They prevented it from all of Quda'a
And against Red Muḍar when they raided one another.
And from red Mudar during discord.

They killed Tai violently,
Abū Jābir, and took Umm Jābir in marriage.
Abu Jabir, and married Umm Jabir by force.
