وَكَيفَ تَصابي المَرءَ وَالشَيبُ شامِلُ
Passion summoned you, and the dwellings stirred you to folly.
And how can a man play the youth when gray hair has spread everywhere?

I stopped at the dwelling's site; decay had altered
its familiar landmarks, as had the drenching night rains.

I ask after Su'da, though since our departure
seven full years have passed over the dwelling's courtyards.

So I soothed what ailed me with an evening ride on a sturdy she-camel,
trotting with my saddle at times, at others striding swiftly;

firm in her hind-leg sinews, compact of back,
swift when the easy-striding thoroughbreds grow weary.

When she frisked, it seemed I had fastened the saddle
upon a full-grown wild ass from those that 'Aqil harbors,
أَقَبَّlean-bellied كَعَقدِlike the arch of الأَندَرِيِّthe Andari مُسَحَّجٍscarred

حُزابِيَّةٍ قَد كَدَّمَتهُ المَساحِلُ
lean-bellied, like the Andari's arch, scarred,
a thickset beast, bitten by wild-ass stallions.

He keeps close to a long-bodied she-ass, sleek from shedding,
turning her about, since mates have eluded him.

When she challenges him to run, he strives; and if she flags,
he eases his pace, neither weary nor faltering.

And if they descend to level ground, they stir a dust cloud;
and if they climb rough ground, rocks splinter.

what gladdened them has indeed overwhelmed me and shattered
with its terrors my strength and all my resources.

So may the enemies find no joy in their king's fall,
nor did Tamim and Wa'il ever win freedom from him.

when the tribes churned up rainwater.

Al-Nu'man leads it forth, his cauldrons boiling;
the kettles seethe with the instruments of death.

shielding his brows from the dust the troops stir up.

then may you never be far away; death is an appointment,
and every man's condition must one day pass away.

For nothing would have stood between us and good fortune, had he returned safe—
Abu Hujr—save a few short nights.

my life holds nothing worthwhile after your death.

Those who prayed over him returned with clear certainty,
and sound judgment and bounty were left behind in al-Jawlan.

Harith of al-Jawlan wept for the loss of his lord,
