فَإِنso if يَكُbe عامِرٌʿĀmir قَدalready قالَsaid جَهلاًrashly
فَإِنَّfor indeed مَظِنَّةَlikely place of الجَهلِrashness الشَبابُyouth
So if ʿĀmir has spoken rashly,
For youth is indeed where rashness is to be expected.
فَكُنso be كَأَبيكَlike your father أَوor كَأَبيlike Abū بَراءٍBarāʾ
تُوافِقكَwill accord with you الحُكومَةُjudgment وَالصَوابُand rightness
So be like your father, or like Abū Barāʾ,
Then judgment and rightness will be on your side.
وَلاand let not تَذهَبgo away بِحِلمِكَwith your forbearance طامِياتٌsurging floods
مِنَof الخُيَلاءِarrogance لَيسَthere is not لَهُنَّfor them بابُa gate
And let no surging floods sweep away your forbearance—
Floods of arrogance with no gate to contain them.
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you سَوفَwill تَحلُمُgrow forbearing أَوor تَناهىrestrain yourself
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle شِبتَyou turn gray أَوor خابَfails الغُرابُthe raven
For you will grow forbearing, or restrain yourself,
When you turn gray—or the raven fails.
فَإِنso if تَكُنِbe الفَوارِسُthe horsemen يَومَon the day of حِسيٍḤisy
أَصابواthey gained مِنfrom لِقائِكَmeeting you ماwhat أَصابواthey gained
So if the horsemen on the day of Ḥisy
Gained what they gained from meeting you,
فَماso not إِنemphatic particle كانَit was مِنfrom نَسَبٍkinship بَعيدٍdistant
وَلَكِنbut أَدرَكوكَthey overtook you وَهُمwhile they were غِضابُangry
It was certainly not the doing of distant kin;
But they overtook you while they were angry—
فَوارِسُhorsemen مِنfrom مَنولَةَManūlah غَيرُnot ميلٍunsteady riders
وَمُرَّةَand Murrah فَوقَabove جَمعِهِمُtheir host العُقابُthe eagle
Horsemen of Manūlah, no unsteady riders,
And Murrah, with the eagle above their host.
