أَلَمdid ... not? أُقسِمI swear عَلَيكَupon you لِتُخبِرَنّيthat you must tell me
أَمَحمولٌis ... being borne? عَلىupon النَعشِthe bier الهُمامُthe noble lord
Did I not adjure you to tell me?
Is the noble lord being borne upon the bier?
فَإِنّيfor I لاnot أُلامُam blamed عَلىfor دُخولٍentering
وَلَكِنbut ماwhat وَراءَكَbehind you ياO عِصامُIsam
For I am not to blame for entering;
but what news have you, O Isam?
فَإِنfor if يَهلِكperishes أَبوfather of قابوسَQabus يَهلِكperishes
رَبيعُthe springtime of الناسِthe people وَالشَهرُand the month الحَرامُsacred
For if Abu Qabus perishes, there perish
the people's springtime and the sacred month.
وَنُمسِكُand we cling بَعدَهُafter him بِذِنابِto the tail of عَيشٍa life
أَجَبِّshorn flat الظَهرِthe back لَيسَthere is not لَهُfor it سَنامُa hump
And after him we cling to the tail of a life
with its back shorn flat, without a hump.
