أَلاAh! مَنwho مُبلِغٌwill convey a message عَنّيfrom me خُزَيماًKhuzaym
وَزَبّانِand Zabban الَّذيwho لَمdid not يَرعَhonor صِهريmy kinship by marriage
Ah, who will carry word from me to Khuzaym
Alas! Who will convey on my behalf to Khizaymah,
And Zabban, who did not honor my ties of marriage?
And to the wayward one who did not guard my in-law kinship;
فَإِيّاكُمso beware, all of you وَعوراًand scurrilous verses دامِياتٍblood-drawing
كَأَنَّas though صِلائَهُنَّtheir scorching heat صِلاءُthe scorching heat of جَمرِembers
So beware of scurrilous, blood-drawing verses,
So beware the mischief of backbiting women
As though their scorching heat were the heat of embers.
Whose prayers are like the sparks of glowing embers.
فَإِنّيfor I قَدindeed أَتانيhas reached me ماwhat صَنَعتُمyou did
وَماand what وَشَّحتُمُyou embellished مِنfrom شِعرِthe poetry of بَدرِBadr
For what you did has indeed reached me,
For verily I have received what you have done,
And what you embellished from Badr’s verse.
And how little esteem you had from the full moon poetry.
فَلَمso not يَكُwas نَولُكُمfitting for you أَنto تُشقِذونيspurn me
وَدونيwhile between me and you عازِبٌAzib وَبِلادُand the lands of حَجرِHajr
It was not fitting for you to spurn me,
So it was not up to you to rescue me,
With Azib and the lands of Hajr between us.
Though single I am, in a land of stones.
فَإِنَّfor indeed جَوابَهاthe reply to it فيon كُلِّevery يَومٍday
أَلَمَّhas struck بِأَنفُسٍat lives مِنكُمamong you وَوَفرِand wealth
For the reply to that verse, day after day,
For its answer comes every day,
Has struck at lives among you, and at wealth.
Afflicting souls among you and widespread.
وَمَنand whoever يَتَرَبَّصِawaits الحَدَثانِfortune’s turns تَنزِلdescends
بِمَولاهُupon his ally عَوانٌa seasoned war غَيرُnot بِكرِa maiden
And whoever awaits fortune’s turns—there descends
And whoever waits for news,
Upon his ally a seasoned war, no maiden.
His Master sends him support without early merit.
