Banu Amir said, “Forsake Banu Asad.”

Alas for ignorance, so harmful to peoples!

Experience forbids it: we seek no others in their place,

Nor do we desire severance after firm union.

So make peace with us all, if it seems good to you,

And do not say such things to us, Amir.

Indeed, I fear for you that there may befall you,

Because of hatred for them, a day like past battle-days:

    لا النورُ نورٌ وَلا الإِظلامُ إِظلامُ

    Its stars appear though the sun is risen;

Neither light is light nor darkness darkness.

Or that you rouse a grim, dark host without an equal,

Like night, mingling bands with bands.

Bearing rings of fine mail on their backs, led by

Aquiline-nosed men, mighty smiters of heads.

They have a banner in both hands of a noble champion,

Who crosses no wilderness save with his gaze held high.

He leads green battalions that nothing can protect

Except a headlong rush toward death at Iljam.

How many of you our cavalry has left upon a battlefield—

For the limping hyenas—hands after feet!

Ah, many a woman with a beloved has been bereaved of him,

And many made orphans who had not been orphans before.

And the horses know that, amid their wheeling,

At spear-fighting, we possess fierce might and generosity.

They fled, their ram of a chief falling upon his brow,

Before the armored warriors, struck down, his belly bleeding.
