Indeed, I told al-Nu‘mān on the day I met him,

As he sought Banū Ḥunn at Burqat Ṣādir:

Avoid Banū Ḥunn, for meeting them

Is dreadful, even if you encounter only one steadfast fighter.

The sons of ‘Udhra take mighty mouthfuls; they

Are mighty chiefs, gulping them down their throats.

And they defended Wādī al-Qurā against their enemy

With a host that destroys the enemy who vies in numbers—

Of palms that seek water on the plain, drawing it

Through their bases before the daggers draw water:

Buzākhī palms wrapped in fibre, as though it were

The shaggy coats of young she-camels whose traders have fled.

Small-pitted and compact; their skins do not

Fly off when other date-skins fly away from them.

They drove Balī from it, and so

Balī found itself in a low-lying valley of Tihāmah.

And they defended it against all of Quḍā‘ah,

And against Red Muḍar when they raided one another.

And they killed the man of Ṭayyi’ at al-Ḥajr by force,

Abū Jābir, and took Umm Jābir in marriage.
