المَرءُa man يَأمُلُhopes أَنto يَعيشَlive
وَطولُand a long duration عَيشٍof life قَدmay يَضُرُّهharm him
A man hopes to live,
Man hopes to live long
and a long life may harm him.
Though longevity may do him harm.

His cheerfulness fades, and there remains,
His freshness fades away,
after life's sweetness, its bitterness.
After the sweetness of life come bitterness.
وَتَخونُهُand betray him الأَيّامُthe days حَتّىuntil

And the days betray him until
The days betray him till he sees
he sees nothing that delights him.
Nothing that gives him pleasure.
كَمhow many شامِتٍone who gloats بيover me إِنif هَلِكتُI perished
وَقائِلٍand one who says لِلَّهِto God belongs دَرُّهhis excellence (literally, his milk yield)
How many would gloat over me if I perished,
How many secret gloaters there are
and how many would say, "God bless him!"
If I die, and how many who say "His loss!"
