O dwelling of Mayyah at al-Alya, then al-Sanad!

It lies deserted; long ages have passed over it.

    عَيَّت جَواباً وَما بِالرَبعِ مِن أَحَدِ

    I stood there at dusk, questioning it;

it could give no answer, and no one was in the campsite,

save the tethering-stakes, which I could barely distinguish,

and the rain-ditch, like a basin in untouched, hard earth.

Its outer edges had been turned back upon it, and it was packed down

by the serving girl's blows with a spade in the damp earth.

It cleared the way for a torrent it had once restrained,

and drove it up to the two tent-curtains, then the piled bedding.

    أَخنى عَلَيها الَّذي أَخنى عَلى لُبَدِ

    It has become desolate, and its people have packed up and gone;

what destroyed Lubad has destroyed it.

So turn away from what you see, since it cannot be reclaimed,

and raise the saddle-frames onto a sturdy, firmly built she-camel,

packed with dense flesh; her mature fang

grinds with the creak of a pulley against its twisted rope.

It is as though my saddle, with the day declining upon us,

on the day of al-Jalil, were on a solitary bull, listening alertly,

one of Wajrah's wild beasts, with patterned shanks,

lean-bellied, like the sword-polisher's peerless sword.

    تُزجي الشَمالُ عَلَيهِ جامِدَ البَرَدِ

    A night-raincloud from al-Jawza swept over him;

the north wind drove hard hail upon him.

Startled by a huntsman's cry, he passed the night at his mercy,

a prey to gloating foes through fear and bitter cold.

He loosed the hounds upon him, and onward he was borne by

    slender-jointed legs, free of lameness.

Dhumran was near him, where he could hold him off

with the thrust of a brave fighter brought to bay.

He pierced the flank-muscle with his sharp horn and drove it through,

like a veterinarian's lancing to cure shoulder disease.

Jutting from the side of his flank, it looked like

    a drinking-party's spit forgotten beside a roasting-hearth.

He kept gnawing the horn's tip, huddled tight,

on a dark-hued, sturdy horn, free of crookedness.

When Washiq saw his companion killed outright,

with no way to claim blood-money or retaliation,

his soul told him: 'I see no hope,

for your companion neither escaped unharmed nor caught his prey.'

That she-camel will bring me to al-Nu'man, for he has

preeminence over people, both near and far.

I see no one among men whose deeds resemble his,

and I make no exception for anyone among the peoples,

except Sulayman, when God said to him:

Arise among creation and restrain it from folly,

and subdue the jinn: I have granted them leave

to build Tadmur with stone slabs and columns.

Whoever obeys you, do him good for his obedience,

as he obeyed you, and guide him toward right conduct.

Whoever defies you, punish him with a punishment

that deters the oppressor; do not sit nursing rancor,

except toward your equal, or one whom you surpass,

as a noble steed outstrips the rest when it reaches the finish.

More generous with a splendid gift, sweet in its consequences,

    among gifts never given grudgingly.

The giver of a hundred massive camels, adorned by

    the sa'dan burrs of Tawdih in their matted coats;

and pale camels held in check, their elbows turned outward,

    strapped with new saddles from al-Hirah;

and women sweeping their robes' hems, made delicate

    by coolness in midday heat, like gazelles on bare ground;

and horses galloping eagerly against their reins,

like birds escaping from a hail-laden downpour.

Judge as the tribe's maiden judged, when she looked

at water-seeking pigeons coming to a scanty pool.

Two sides of a lofty peak enclosed them, and she tracked them with

an eye like glass, never treated with kohl for inflammation.

She said: 'Ah, if only these pigeons were ours,

along with our pigeon and half their number—that would suffice.'

They calculated it and found it just as she had calculated:

ninety-nine, with neither shortfall nor excess.

Her own pigeon made the hundred complete,

and she was swift in reckoning that number.

No! By the life of Him whose Ka'bah I have stroked,

and by the blood poured upon the sacrificial stones,

and by Him who safeguards the sanctuary-seeking birds, stroked

    by Mecca's riders between al-Ghayl and al-Sa'ad,

    إِذاً فَلا رَفَعَت سَوطي إِلَيَّ يَدي

    I said none of the evil things you have brought forward;

if I did, may my hand never raise my whip toward me.

    كانَت مَقالَتُهُم قَرعاً عَلى الكَبِدِ

    It was only others' talk, through which I suffered;

their words were a pounding on my liver.

If so, may my Lord punish me with a punishment

that gladdens the eye of whoever brings you lies.

I was told that Abu Qabus has threatened me,

and there is no peace before a lion's roar.

Gently! May all the peoples be your ransom,

and all the wealth and offspring I nurture.

Do not assail me with a force that has no equal,

even if enemies encircle you with support.

For not even the Euphrates, when the winds stir it,

its surging waves hurling foam upon both banks,

fed by every brimming, roaring watercourse,

with heaps of yanbut shrubs and broken branches within it,

the boatman clinging for safety in fear of it

to the tiller after weariness and sweat,

    وَلا يَحولُ عَطاءُ اليَومِ دونَ غَدِ

    is ever more generous than he in freely flowing bounty;

nor does today's giving stand in the way of tomorrow's.

This is praise; if you hear good in it,

I have not hinted at a gift—may you be spared cursing.

Behold, this is an apology; if it has not availed,

then its author shares in misery.
