إلى أين في هذه الفانية

نروح ونغدو وماذا هيه

Where, in this fleeting world,

do we go at evening and morning—and what is it?

ونحن الاناسي عبدانها

اسارى هوانا بني الهاوية

And we humans are its slaves,

captives of our desire, children of the abyss.

لماذا خلقنا وماذا ترى

نكون وهلا نجي ثانية

Why were we created, and what, do you think,

shall we be—and why should we not come again?

وفيم نجيء افي طائر

يغرد أم زهرة فاغية

And in what shall we come—in a bird

that sings, or a fragrant flower?

والا ففيم افي حية

تنضنض ام شوكة جاسية

And if not, then in what—in a snake

that flicks its tongue, or a rigid thorn?

وبعد انفني والا نعد

كشأننا في الحالة الماضية

And afterward, shall we perish, or return

as in our former state?

ونخلد أم انفنى لا نرى ال

خلود على أرضنا الفانية

Shall we live forever, or perish, never seeing

immortality on our fleeting earth?

وهبنا خلدنا اليس الخلود

تغير أجسادنا البالية

And suppose we lived forever—is not immortality

the changing of our decaying bodies?

فطوراً تكون أواني الخمور

وأخرى هي الخمر في الآنية

At one time they become vessels for wine,

at another, the wine within the vessels,

وآنا تكون قبوراً لها

ركائزها الرأس والناصية

and at times they become graves for it,

their supports the head and the forelock.

ففي كل ناحية حفرة

وفي كل حفرة ناحية

For in every corner there is a pit,

and in every pit, a corner.

نحب ونكره في لحظة

ونشقى ونسعد في ثانية

We love and hate in a moment,

and suffer and rejoice in a second.

ونرتاب في الأمر حين اليقين

ونوقن في الريبة الطامية

We doubt the matter at the moment of certainty,

and feel certain amid surging doubt.

ونأمل واليأس مستحكم

ونيأس حين المنى راضية

We hope while despair holds sway,

and despair when wishes are content.

وتضحكنا مبكيات الحياة

ونبكي على الضحكة الداوية

Life's sorrows make us laugh,

and we weep over the resounding laugh.

وابصارنا لا ترى في الضياء

وتبصر في الحلكة الداجية

Our eyes do not see in the light,

yet see in pitch-black darkness.

نذم الحياة وانا بها

لأصبى من الزاني بالزانية

We revile life, yet for it we yearn

more than the adulterer for the adulteress.

ونطلب الموت فإن يقترب

نلاقيه بالادمع القانية

We seek death, but if it draws near,

we meet it with crimson tears.

ونسعى إلى المجد حتى إذا

بلغناه نبغي ذرى الرابية

We strive for glory until, when

we attain it, we seek the hill's heights.

ونمضي ويمضي بنا مسرعاً

هوانا فندرج في الهاوية

We press on, and sweeping us swiftly onward is

our desire; so we step into the abyss.

ويفنى السطموح وتذوب المنى

وندفن في حفرة نائية

Ambition perishes, and wishes melt away,

and we are buried in a distant pit.

اناس نشاوى حب الحياة

ودنيا على أهلها باغية

People drunk on the love of life,

and a world that oppresses its inhabitants.

مراد النفوس بلهنية

وكأس من لاخمر أو غانية

The souls' desire is ease,

and a cup of wine, or a lovely woman.

وبعض النفوس مني حكمة

وفلسفة فذة عاليه

For some souls, the wish is wisdom,

and a rare, lofty philosophy.

وتخدعنا بارقات الأماني

وتجلبنا العيشة الهانية

The flashes of hope deceive us,

and a pleasant life draws us in.

ونغدو نشاوى متاع الحياة

وتضطرم الشهوة الجانية

We become drunk on life's pleasures,

and sinful passion blazes up.

طيوف رغائب طي الثرى

ومقبرة قفرة خالية

Phantoms of desires beneath the soil,

and a desolate, empty graveyard.

كواكب تملأ رحب الفضاء

نراها ولا نعلم ماهي

Stars fill the vastness of space;

we see them but do not know what they are.

وتذهلنا تملأ رحب الفضاء

تنير وتظلم في ناحية

They bewilder us, filling the vastness of space,

shining and darkening in some quarter.

فيبدو نهار ويتلو دجى

وتطريهما الموجد العاتية

Day appears, and darkness follows,

and the fierce creator renews them both [text unclear].

ويستوي اليوم وما قبله

وتستوي الليلة والماضية

Today and what came before it are alike,

and tonight and the last night are alike.

وامس مثل الغدو اليوم ما

بينهما في حيرة طاغية

Yesterday is like tomorrow, and today is what lies

between them, in overwhelming bewilderment.

ونحن نروح ونغدو على

طيوف من الذكر الواهية

And we go at evening and morning upon

phantoms of frail memories.

ونبكي على ذكريات مضت

ونخشى من الذكر الاتية

We weep over memories gone by,

and fear the memories yet to come.

وتلهو بنا حادثات الزمان

وايدي القضا بنا لاهية

Time's vicissitudes toy with us,

and the hands of fate play with us.

ومالي أنا ذاهل حائر

وماذا عراني وماذا فيه

And why am I bewildered and perplexed?

What has come over me, and what is within me?

افكر في مبهمات الوجود

ولغز حياة الورى الفانية

I ponder the mysteries of existence,

and the riddle of humanity's fleeting life,

وسر الخلود بعيد الممات

واحوال تلك القوى الخافية

and the secret of immortality just after death,

and the workings of those hidden powers.

وأسأل في وحدتي من أنا

وماذا عليّ وماذا ليه

In my solitude I ask: who am I?

And what is required of me, and what is mine?

فاحتار في حل هذه الرقى

واصدم بالخيبة القاسية

So I am perplexed in unraveling these spells,

and am struck by harsh disappointment.

فاذ بفكري قبس مظلم

واذ بذهني شعلة خابية

Then behold, in my thought is a darkened spark,

and behold, in my mind a dying flame.

وازداد علما بجهلي وما

أراني سوى ذرة هابية

I grow more aware of my ignorance, and do not

see myself as anything but a drifting mote,

يسيرها كيف شاء القضاء

فتدعن مضطرة راضية

which fate steers however it wills;

so it submits, compelled yet content.

كما موجة تتقي صخرة

فتكسرها صخرة ثانية

Like a wave that avoids a rock,

only to be shattered by a second rock.

طلاسم فيها يحار النهى

طلاسم مرصودة خافية

Talismans in which reason is bewildered,

talismans guarded and hidden.
