O gazelle of the moringa trees, never have I recalled you

without breathing in a flash of lightning from your teeth.

I watch the stars, and my heart is a singing bird,

singing the songs of its love around your dwelling.

I intone poetry in the depths of darkness—images

from imagination, bearing the lamenter's anguish.

    And I fill the air with singing kisses;

in their enchantment I melted [your mouth], O my heart's desire.

I see your image while dreams lie still,

and my wakeful eye yearns for the sight of you.

And my heart burns with love, and still

your eyes stir love's flame within it.

O my maiden, a ray of magic is breathed forth

by Harut into you, so it appears together with your countenance.

Has longing for me not stirred you? How I marvel!

O, would that I were a yearning in your heart's folds!

The beauty of your face stirred love in my liver.

For God's sake, pity my burning liver and your languishing lover!

I swore by love, with the celestial spheres bearing witness:

My heart has known none but you, O my Layla.
