My anguished heart, why do I see you jubilant?

And why, my heart, does your throbbing grow stronger?

The abundance of hopes has returned to you, though you had been

O heart, nothing but despairing and distressed.

Why will you not be still? For if melancholy befalls you,

you have placed manifold hopes in the great hope.

And great hope grants you cheerfulness,

and great longing heightens your flame.

O abode, my heart has melted in its pains.

So you became not one heart—you became many hearts.

God is in you, my brother, and in your glances—

    sweet, gazing north and south.

you examine my heart closely, you will find it wondrous.

    فاعجب لقلبي راضياً وغضوبا

    It has gathered contentment and anger within its folds;

so marvel at my heart, contented and wrathful.

Yet it is a heart that sensed you, then turned,

and went toward you, heeding your call and responding.

A heart that, upon meeting you, became blessed,

and, upon parting from your sanctuary, became sorrowful.

O hour of meeting, may I be your ransom—an hour

that brought together a lovesick, yearning lover and a beloved.

in my delight, through the years and close at hand.

has endured, through you, both happiness and torment.

O you who inspire me with the magic of eloquence at dawn,

and teach me the language of life at sunset,

and purify my sinful soul, and kindle

hopes within me, and teach me refinement,

and strive for God with the striving He is due,

and dispel anguish in the hours of calamity:

I still remain, despite calamities, a brother to reason,

by the life of your love, steadfast and tireless.

The memory of meeting stirs me, and I turn

merry and playful, as happiness returns to me.

And the memory of parting shakes me into lamentation,

so I flow in a torrent of outpoured tears.

and contentment, it shows you calamities and tribulations.

A chatterbox, she displays chastity; yet if she showed herself,

chastity would appear as disgraces and flaws.

Glad tidings, Dahesh, if you hold our life in contempt:

yours is the Garden of Refuge, my brother, and blessedness.

How strange! People see you robed

in old age, while youth clothes you in pallor.

    لما بدوت مطلسما وغريبا

    Had they known you, their wonder would have vanished;

you would not have appeared enigmatic and strange.

You have spent your life in reverent fear and contemplation,

and passed your life coming and going.

And I, likewise, see life as contemptible,

so I have repaid it with aversion and frowns.

But I complain to you of my soul, for it

has grown corrupt, though the wish of souls was to grow pure.
