Kindred spirit of the Messenger, greetings and peace!

Through you the Bedouin and Islam grew mighty.

O you of majesty, dignity, and might,

And proud-spirited youth whom none can wrong!

Faruq, O symbol of justice and reason,

Hearts hold love and passion for you.

Or do you not see us gathering for your anniversary,

And our hearts uniting thanks to it?

Ah, memories of you, as they carry us back to

The days when you lived—and what days they were!

Days when glory's peaks stood high,

And its arrows were upon the brow of time.

Days when we were an Arab nation,

Striving for the heights, never sleeping.

Days when truth possessed greater strength,

And the keen sword and the pens embraced.

    O great man, whose memory

Has filled the ages and the years!

    لم تثنه الاوصاب والآلام

    He arrived on a humpless camel, with a servant;

Ailments and pains did not deter him.

How just is al-Faruq, walking humbly,

With the sand, not the camel's back, for his hump!

And the sun shines above him, and he is adorned by

The light of certainty, majesty, and peace.

Blessed are you, when you led the camel for a servant,

And so masters and servants became equals.

O great conqueror of Jerusalem, and a lord

Among lords who are virtuous and noble!

    وبمثل حكمك تفخر الأحكام

    You exercised your rule in the lands, yet did no wrong;

And rulings take pride in rule like yours.

You spent your life in reverent fear and worship,

And kept vigil through your night while humankind slept.

And melted your soul in virtue and piety,

And illness seized you from overwhelming bewilderment.

And you scorned this life of ours, O kindred spirit of the Messenger,

And cast it aside—our life is mere illusion.

Great Umar, are you not the most just conqueror

Whose purity of soul the peoples have attested?

Your people's foes, when their names are compared

With yours, are shattered as though they were idols.

They conquered, then ruled unjustly and transgressed—woe to them!

Your people's enemies are base oath-breakers.

What a gulf there is in life between you and them!

You are the light; they are darkness that swept in.

They conquered the lands, and their conqueror said, “Here

The Crusaders' glory is being raised anew.”

    You conquered and said, “Christianity—

Do not despise it; let Islam protect it.”

How far apart the two sayings! This one is palatable,

Sweet, while minds spit the other out.

Do not gloat, you there, for we are

A noble people, despite the times.

Leave the lands to us; or else, between you—

O mischief-makers—and us, the days will judge.
