وجن الليل يا ليلى

وغاب البدر والنجم

And the full moon and the star vanished.

ولم أصبر على الهجر

وذاك الصد اشقاني

And I could not endure estrangement,

And that rejection made me wretched.

وذنبي انني باق

على عهدي لخلاني

And my fault is that I remain

True to my pledge to my dear friends.

وهذا الذنب يا ليلى

الا يمحى بغفران

And this fault, O Layla—

And the hour of parting came,

وهبت القلب باليمنى

وعدت سلبت باليسرى
