    Are these cloudbanks you see, or nights?

    Or do you see these as forms of fantasy?

    And hopes—would that I knew—or deaths

    That mock, or delusion within delusion?

    والانام سافيات من رمال

    Life is deceptive flashes of lightning;

    And humankind is windblown drifts of sand;

    ومنايانا جسور الانتقال

    And our hopes are forms of dust;

    And our deaths are bridges of transition.

    من رزايا العرب فقدان الرجال

    Many are the calamities among the sons of the Arabs;

    Among the Arabs' calamities is the loss of men.

    How often, to my soul's grief, have we lost a cherished one,

    And choked on our heavy calamities.

    And we have grown numb to calamities,

    For we lost feeling from the blows of blades.

    زلزلت من هولها صم الجبال

    Our losses among the Hashemites are manifold;

    Their horror shook the solid mountains.

    Faisal has gone, and before him Hussein,

    And Prince Shakir, lion of the struggle.

    And finally we have been bereaved of Ali,

    The king we looked to with hope, lofty in deeds,

    The unsullied, the pure of heart—and who

    Is like Ali in merits and virtues?

    And I seem to see Ali transformed into a spirit,

    Fashioned of beauty, or of majesty.

    O king who left this world to ascend

    To eternity's host and beauty's paradise,

    وبكتك المكرمات والمعالي

    Much have we wept for you, brother of the Arabs;

    And noble deeds and lofty virtues have wept for you.

    وبكتك البيض والسمر العوالي

    And hopes, at their loftiest, have wept for you;

    And white swords and tall brown spears have wept for you.

    Tell us now, O spirit of Ali,

    Of the tales of eternity and passing away.

    Why did you scorn kingship and this world, and what

    Were you hoping to gain from the hereafter?

    حدثي انت انطلقتِ من عقال

    Speak—you have escaped from fetters;

    Speak—you have broken free of the tether.

    Speak of the people you see

    Leaping over this earth like she-ghouls.

    Tell us of the sons of the Arabs, and what

    Torment and chastisement have befallen them.

    Tell us of all the sons of this world,

    What ill fate they encounter.

    Speak of the evils you see,

    And foes and fruitless wrangling.

    Speak of the souls you see,

    Fallen in pursuit of wealth, heedless.

    Speak: what is death, O spirit of Ali?

    Is it truly a bridge of transition?

    And the soul's immortality, O spirit of Ali—

    Why do we find it so hard to attain amid the dust?

    Then where are you now, and what

    Are you—a spirit in a nebula, or a crescent moon?

    هل لقيت فيصلاً زين الرجال

    Speak of those you have met in the heights;

    Have you met Faisal, the ornament of men?

    Tell us, for the tale is full of sorrows,

    And remove the veils from behind the shadows.

    O Death, my beloved, visit me, for my soul

    Has come to loathe the earth and yearns for the heights.
