1. صفق القلب اذ نظر

    غادة تسلب النظر

    The heart clapped when it saw

    a maiden who steals the gaze.

  2. في لماها ابتسامة

    تخطف اللب والبصر

    On her dusky lips, a smile

    snatches mind and sight.

  3. في جبينها السني

    وفي عيونها الخبر

    In her radiant brow,

    and in her eyes, the tidings lie.

  4. جيدها صفحة السما

    وجهها هالة القمر

    Her neck is the sky's page;

    her face, the moon's halo.

  5. ان ثنت لين عطفها

    ينثني الغصن والحجر

    If she bends her supple side,

    branch and stone bend.

  6. ركبت من لطافة

    ان نمت يختفي الاثر

    She was fashioned from delicacy;

    if it grows, her trace vanishes.

  7. انها الحسن صورت

    في كثير من الصور

    She is beauty, embodied

    in many forms.

  8. قلت يا غادة انظري

    ان قلبي قد انفطر

    I said: Maiden, look:

    my heart has indeed split apart,

  9. ثائر كل ثائر

    مثل بركان استعر

    raging, utterly raging,

    like a volcano blazing up.

  10. انظري كيف انه

    خافق طائر الشرر

    Look how it is

    throbbing, its sparks flying.

  11. القت الكف برهة

    فوق قلبي وقد زفر

    She laid her palm for a moment

    upon my heart, which had sighed.

  12. ثم قالت بلهفة

    انما انت تحتضر

    Then she said anxiously:

    You are simply dying.

  13. قلبك الان مغرق

    في خفوق ومستمر

    Your heart is now engulfed

    in unceasing throbbing.

  14. حدث الطب انه

    ان غلا القلب ينفطر

    Medicine has declared that

    if the heart boils, it splits apart.

  15. حدّد الطب دقة ال

    قلب واستكنه الضرر

    Medicine has measured the beat of the

    heart and fathomed the harm.

  16. فاذهب الان واسترح

    قلبك اليوم في خطر

    So go now and rest;

    your heart today is in danger.

  17. قلت يا غادة اقصري

    غاب عنك الذي ظهر

    I said: Maiden, desist;

    what was plain has escaped you.

  18. انظري وجهي الذي

    حينما شامك انتضر

    Look at my face, which

    grew radiant when it beheld you.

  19. وانظري الدم قانياً

    فيه يجري وينتشر

    And look at the blood, crimson,

    flowing and spreading within it.

  20. وانظري النور ساطعاً

    بين عيني ينتثر

    And look at the light, radiant,

    scattering between my eyes.

  21. واعلمي يا مليكتي

    ثم كوني على حذر

    And know, my queen—

    then be on your guard—

  22. ان قلبي اذا غلا

    في خفوق غلا العمر

    that when my heart boils

    with throbbing, life boils too,

  23. وجرى فيه عندم

    قانيء يبهر الفكر

    and through it flows red dye,

    deep crimson, dazzling the mind.

  24. كذب الطب غادتي

    قلبي بالحب قد عمر

    Medicine has lied, my maiden;

    my heart has been filled with love.
