Who are these wild-cow calves in Bedouin dress,
Who are these gazelles in Bedouin guise?
With red ornaments, mounts, and cloaks?
Crimson their ornaments, their camels, and their robes.

If you ask in doubt of who they might be,
Then who afflicted you with sleeplessness and torment?
Then who has afflicted you with sleeplessness and pain?

After them, let no wild cows repay me with wasting sickness,
Let not these wild cows repay my sickness with more disdain;
Returning my poured-out tears with poured-out tears.
My tears repay a flow with a flow in kind.

Traveling women, whose howdahs have often passed
Travelers whose howdahs drift along,
Inviolate among men spear-pierced and sword-struck.
Well-guarded midst the stabbed and the struck.

And perhaps the mounts' hooves have paced with them,
Over the spilled blood of horsemen.
Over the spilled lifeblood of fallen knights.

How many a secret visit you made among the Bedouins,
How many a secret visit you made among the tribes,
More cunning, while they slept, than a wolf's visit!
More cunning, while they slept, than the stalking wolf.

I visit them, and the night's blackness intercedes for me;
I visit them when night's blackness pleads my cause,
I turn back, and dawn's whiteness incites them against me.
And return when dawn's whiteness betrays my path.

They share with wild beasts the dwelling in their grazing grounds,
They share the wild beasts' dwelling in the wilds,
But differ from them in striking tents and pitching them.
Yet differ in striking tents and tightening ropes.

Neighbors to the game, yet the worst of neighbors they,
And their companions, yet the worst of companions.
Companions to the herd, yet the deadliest of friends.

In their tents lies the heart of every lover,
And the wealth of every man robbed of his goods and despoiled.
And the wealth of every raider lies despoiled.

The townswomen's faces, admired there, are not
The city faces, beautified with art,
Like the faces of fair, soft-skinned Bedouin women.
Are naught to the Bedouin faces, soft and fair.

Urban beauty is contrived through cosmetics;
The city's beauty is a crafted, borrowed thing,
In Bedouin life there is beauty not contrived.
But in the wild, beauty is nature's own, unbought.

How can goats compare with white gazelles, alive
What are goats to the white antelopes when they gaze?
Or dead, in beauty and savor?
Or even ungazing, in beauty and in scent?

I ransom the desert does who never learned
Chewing their words or dyeing their eyebrows.
To mince their words or dye their eyebrows dark.

Hips and polished heels.

And from a love of truth in word and habit,
I have shunned hair on my head made false.
I shunned the hair that lies upon the head.

Would that Fortune sold back what it stole from me,
From me, for the wisdom and experience they gave me.
For the wisdom and experience it gave in turn.

For youth does not preclude wisdom;
Yet youth is no barrier to a measured mind;
Wisdom may be found among the young and the gray-haired.
Wisdom dwells in the young as in the gray.

The Master King grew up mature in youth,

Cultured and wise before he was ever taught.

Until he grasped the utmost of this world,
While his ambition is still at beginnings and preludes.
While his ambition was but starting its ascent.

To Iraq, the Roman lands, and Nubian soil.

They blow within it only in due order.
They dare not blow save by his strict decree.

Unless it has his leave to set again.

The clay of his seal commands the state's affairs,
Even if every inscription on it were effaced.
Though every written word be blurred and dim.

His courage drives his furthest ranks to death,
To death, so death is not feared.
Until the grave itself is no more feared.

'I sought the torrents pouring from his hands.'

The lord of a like army, amid the blackest, pitch-dark dust.
Leaving their likes amid the pitch-black dust.

Was the gallop and canter of my racing steeds.
Lay in the galloping of noble steeds.

For when they saw Time's turns betraying me,
They kept faith with me, and the hard-shafted spears kept faith.
They stayed true, as did the solid spears.

They outpaced the perils, till the perils' spokesman said,
They pierced the deadly wilds until one cried:
'What have we suffered from these sleek, long-bodied steeds!'
'What feats we faced from these gaunt, racing mares!'

They rush onward with a single-minded man whose pursuits are not
They rush with one unburdened, whose intent
For wearing a garment, or for food and drink.
Is not for robes, or food, or wine to drink.

Like plunder in a captive's longing gaze.

That meets all other souls with grace unveiled.

Housed in a form magnificent and clear,
People's natures make laugh as marvels do.
Who laughs at human ways with wonderment.

Praise first to him, and then praise to the beasts,
And to the spears, my night journeys, and my daytime journeys.
To spears, to night-treks, and to journeying back.

In East and West, above all praise and rank.

You are the beloved, yet I seek your grace,
From being a lover who is not loved.
Lest I be one who loves but is not loved.
