نُعِدُّwe ready المَشرَفِيَّةَMashrafi swords وَالعَواليand tall lances
وَتَقتُلُناand kills us المَنونُdeath بِلاwithout قِتالِbattle
We ready Mashrafi swords and tall lances,
We prepare the heights and summits
We forge the blade and sharpen the spear, / But Death strikes us down without a fight.
Yet death kills us without battle.
Yet death kills us without fighting
We tether swift steeds close at hand, / Yet they cannot save us from the night's assault.
وَنَرتَبِطُand we tether السَوابِقَfleet steeds مُقرَباتٍkept close and cherished
وَماyet not يُنجينَthey save مِنfrom خَبَبِthe trotting of اللَياليthe nights
We tether fleet steeds, kept close and cherished,
We cling to past glories
Who has not loved the world of old? / But to true union there is no path.
Yet they do not save us from the nights' trot.
But night's darkness cannot save us
Your share of a beloved in this life / Is but like a phantom visited in sleep.
وَمَنand who لَمhas not يَعشَقِloved الدُنياthe world قَديماًlong since
وَلَكِنand yet لاthere is no سَبيلَway إِلىto الوِصالِunion
And who has not long loved this world?
He who did not love life once
Time cast its calamities at me / Until my heart was sheathed in arrows.
Yet there is no way to union with it.
Cannot find his way to union
So now, when shafts strike my breast, / The blades shatter upon the blades.
نَصيبُكَyour share فيin حَياتِكَyour life مِنof حَبيبٍa beloved
نَصيبُكَyour share فيin مَنامِكَyour sleep مِنof خَيالِa dream-image
Your share of a beloved in your life
In life you get but a sip of the beloved
Suffering grew light, and I ceased to care, / For I found no gain in grieving.
Is your share of a dream-image in your sleep.
In dreams just a phantom of imagination
This is the first of all death-criers / To announce the first death in this majesty.
رَمانيpelted me الدَهرُtime بِالأَرزاءِwith calamities حَتّىuntil
فُؤاديmy heart فيin غِشاءٍa sheath مِنof نِبالِarrows
Time has pelted me with calamities until
Time pelted me with misfortunes until
As if Death had never pained a soul before, / Nor crossed the mind of any living thing.
My heart is wrapped in a sheath of arrows.
My heart was wrapped in arrows' piercings
May the prayer of God our Creator be a balm / Upon the face shrouded in beauty.
فَصِرتُso I came to be إِذاwhen أَصابَتنيstruck me سِهامٌarrows
تَكَسَّرَتِshattered النِصالُthe arrowheads عَلىagainst النِصالِthe arrowheads
So I have come to this: whenever arrows strike me,
So when spears strike me now
Buried in chastity before the dust claimed her, / In noble virtues before the grave.
The arrowheads shatter against the arrowheads.
They shatter against each other's points
For in the earth’s belly lies a form so new, / Whose memory is fresh, though the body fades.
وَهانَand it grew bearable فَماso I do not أُباليcare بِالرَزاياabout calamities
لِأَنّيbecause I ماdid not اِنتَفَعتُbenefit بِأَنfrom the fact that أُباليI care
It grew bearable, so I care nothing for calamities,
Caring is so petty I do not care
No mortal is granted eternity; / The world itself turns toward decay.
Because I gained nothing by caring.
Since caring never did me any good
It soothes the soul that you died a death / Which all who remain and all who passed would crave.
وَهَذاand this أَوَّلُthe first of الناعينَheralds of death طُرّاًall
لِأَوَّلِfor the first مَيتَةٍdeceased woman فيin ذاthis الجَلالِmajesty
And this is the first of all heralds of death,
The first buried in this grave
You departed without seeing a hateful day / Where the spirit would find joy in its end.
For the first woman to die in such majesty.
As if death never mourned a soul
The canopy of glory was spread around you, / And the reign of Ali, your son, was absolute.
كَأَنَّas though المَوتَdeath لَمhad not يَفجَعcaused bereavement بِنَفسٍthrough a soul's loss
وَلَمand had not يَخطُرoccurred لِمَخلوقٍto any creature بِبالِin mind
As though death had never caused grief by taking a soul,
Or occurred to any being
May morning rains water your resting place, / Generous as the giving of your hand.
Nor ever crossed any creature's mind.
Our Creator's prayer is perfume
Let the rain drum upon the graves / Like the hooves of horses spotting their feed.
صَلاةُthe blessing of اللَهِGod خالِقِناour Creator حَنوطٌfunerary perfume
عَلىupon الوَجهِthe face المُكَفَّنِshrouded بِالجَمالِin beauty
May the blessing of God, our Creator, be funerary perfume
On the face veiled by beauty
I ask every glory about you now you are gone, / For I know no glory that is empty of you.
Upon the face shrouded in beauty,
Over the buried ere dust covers him
The guest passes your grave and weeps, / His tears distracting him from his request.
عَلىupon المَدفونِthe one buried قَبلَbefore التُربِthe earth صَوناًfor protection
وَقَبلَand before اللَحدِthe tomb فيin كَرَمِnobility of الخِلالِqualities
Upon the one buried in guarded seclusion before the earth,
Or pit closes on his noble form
Nothing would stop you from granting his wish / If only you had the power to act.
And in noble qualities before the tomb.
In earth's womb he has a new self
By your life, have you forgotten? For my heart, / Though far from your land, forgets not.
فَإِنَّfor indeed لَهُit has بِبَطنِin the belly of الأَرضِthe earth شَخصاًa bodily form
جَديداًfresh ذِكرُناهُwe recalled it وَهُوَwhile it is باليdecaying
For in the belly of the earth it has a bodily form,
We recalled though he's unaware
Unwillingly you settled in a place / Far from the south wind and the breeze.
Which we recall as fresh, though it is decaying.
None lives on in the wilds
The scent of lavender is veiled from you, / And the dew of the gardens is denied.
وَماand not أَحَدٌanyone يُخَلَّدُis made immortal فيamong البَراياcreated beings
بَلِrather الدُنياthe world تَؤولُcomes إِلىto زَوالِan end
No one among created beings is made immortal;
For the world tends toward decay
In a house where every dweller is a stranger, / Long abandoned, all ties severed.
Rather, the world itself comes to an end.
It gladdens the soul that you died
Chaste as rainwater within the cloud, / Keeper of secrets, truthful in speech.
أَطابَcomforted النَفسَthe soul أَنَّكَthat you مُتَّdied مَوتاًa death
تَمَنَّتهُwished for it البَواقيthe surviving women وَالخَواليand the women gone before
It comforted the soul that you died a death
The survivors wished they could follow
The physician of the body tended her ills, / While her only son is the physician of glory.
That surviving women and those gone before wished for.
You fell ere seeing the bitter day
If they named a sickness at the frontier, / He cured it with the tips of long spears.
وَزُلتِand you departed وَلَمand did not تَرىsee يَوماًa day كَريهاًbitter
يُسَرُّis gladdened الروحُthe spirit فيهِin it بِالزَوالِby departure
You departed without ever seeing a bitter day
When the soul rejoices in death
She was not like other women, nor those / Whose graves are prepared from bridal chambers.
On which the spirit rejoices in departure.
The hall of glory lies open around you
Nor one whose funeral is attended by merchants / Who bid farewell by dusting off their shoes.
رِواقُthe canopy of العِزِّglory حَولَكِaround you مُسبَطِرٌّspread wide
وَمُلكُand the rule of عَلِيٍّAli اِبنِكِyour son فيin كَمالِfullness
The canopy of glory stretched wide around you,
And your son Ali's reign thrives
Princes walked barefoot around her bier, / As if the jagged stones were softest down.
And the rule of Ali, your son, was in its fullness.
A rain like your palm's downpour
The secluded chambers revealed hidden beauties, / Who smeared soot where perfume once lay.
سَقىmay water مَثواكَyour resting place غادٍa morning raincloud فيamong الغَواديmorning rainclouds
نَظيرُequal to نَوالِthe bounty of كَفِّكِyour palm فيin النَوالِgiving
May a morning cloud among morning clouds water your resting place,
Watered your tomb in the valley
Calamity struck them while they were unaware; / The tear of grief mixed with the tear of grace.
Equal in giving to the bounty of your palm.
For its rider, swords in hand, like
If all women were like the one we have lost, / Then women would be preferred over men.
لِساحيهِfor its sweeping rain عَلىupon الأَجداثِthe graves حَفشٌa fierce rush
كَأَيديlike the forelegs of الخَيلِhorses أَبصَرَتِhave seen المَخاليfeedbags
Its sweeping rain beats fiercely upon the graves,
Horses' hooves glimpsing the bare plains
For the feminine gender is no defect to the Sun, / Nor is the masculine a glory to the Moon.
Like horses' forelegs when they see their feedbags.
Of glory after you I ask each symbol
The most painful loss is of one we found / To be peerless even before she was gone.
أُسائِلُI ask عَنكِabout you بَعدَكِafter your passing كُلَّevery مَجدٍglory
وَماand not عَهديmy experience بِمَجدٍof any glory عَنكِof you خاليempty
I ask every glory about you after your passing,
But know of no glory devoid of you
We bury one another, and generations tread / Upon the very skulls of those who led.
And I have never known a glory devoid of you.
The wayfarer passes your grave and weeps
How many eyes, once kissed and adored, / Are now lined with grit and stone?
يَمُرُّpasses بِقَبرِكِby your grave العافيthe seeker of bounty فَيَبكيand so he weeps
وَيَشغَلُهُand distracts him البُكاءُweeping عَنِfrom السُؤالِasking
The seeker of bounty passes by your grave and weeps,
His weeping stops him from asking
And one who sleeps, who never bowed to trouble, / Now worn away, who once worried for his frame.
And weeping keeps him from asking.
What use in troubling you with worries
O Sayf al-Dawla, summon your patience now— / Though how could mountains bear what you endure?
وَماand how أَهداكِwell-guided you are لِلجَدوىin bestowing bounty عَلَيهِupon him
لَوَif أَنَّكِthat you تَقدِرينَyou are able عَلىto فَعالِaction
And how well you would know to bestow bounty on him,
If you could act from your stall
For you are the one who teaches men to endure, / And to wade through death when battle buckets pour.
If you were capable of action!
In life, did you find peace? My heart
The states of Time may vary upon you, / Yet your state remains one in every plight.
بِعَيشِكِby your life هَلhave سَلَوتِyou found consolation فَإِنَّfor indeed قَلبيmy heart
وَإِنeven though جانَبتُI left أَرضَكِyour land غَيرُnot ساليconsoled
By your life, have you found solace? For my heart,
Though far from your land will not forget
May your seas never run dry, O bountiful one, / Even when drained by the needs of the world.
Even though I have left your land, remains unconsoled.
You came to hate a place
I saw you among those I deem as kings, / A straight line amidst the crooked and absurd.
نَزَلتِyou settled عَلىwith الكَراهَةِreluctance فيin مَكانٍa place
بَعُدتِyou were far عَنِfrom النُعامىthe south wind وَالشَمالِand the north wind
You settled, against your will, in a place
Far from gazelles and north winds
If you surpass all men, though you are one of them, / Know that musk is but part of the deer's blood.
Far from the south wind and the north wind.
The scent of wild orchids is veiled from you
تُحَجَّبُis screened عَنكِfrom you رائِحَةُthe scent of الخُزامىlavender
وَتُمنَعُand is withheld مِنكِfrom you أَنداءُthe moisture of الطِلالِlight rains
The scent of lavender is screened from you,
The echoes of hills cannot reach you
And the moisture of light rains is withheld from you.

In an abode where every dweller is a stranger,
Is a stranger, ropes stretched long
Long estranged, with his cords severed.

A chaste woman, like the water of rainclouds, lies there,
The mute water, honest in speech
A keeper of secrets, truthful in speech.

A master physician of ailments tended her,
While another names its greatest traits
And her peerless son is a master physician of lofty deeds.
If they described a mouth lesion

It would drink from snakes' long fangs
He makes it drink the points of long lances.

Whose graves are but enclosures
For whom graves are reckoned as bridal chambers,
With merchants in the funeral train

Bidding farewell by casting off shoes
Whose farewell is the shaking of sandals.

The princes walked barefoot around her,
As if treading on hot coals
As though the flint were down from ostrich chicks.
And ladies revealed what was hidden

And the curtained chambers brought forth secluded women
Removing veils in their chambers
Who put ink in place of precious perfumes.
Affliction caught them unawares

The calamity came upon them unawares,
Mourning's tears mixed with mascara's
So tears of grief mingle with tears of coquetry.
If women were like the one we lost

And if women were like the one we have lost,
They would surpass all men
Women would surely be deemed superior to men.

The feminine gender of the sun's name is no flaw,
Masculine moon no special honor
Nor is masculine gender a source of pride for the crescent.
But you left the most bereft those

And most grievous among those we lost is one we found
Who found you the epitome of grace
Just before the loss to have no equal.
We bury each other while those left

Walk upon the footsteps of the past
Our later generations walk upon the skulls of the earlier.

And many an eye whose corners were kissed
Blinded by darkness and shifting sands
Is lined with stones and sand for kohl.
That tearful one who never rose for trouble

And one with lowered eyes who never lowered them before calamity,
Now ponders only loss and devastation
And a decaying body that once worried about thinness.
O pillar of the state, seek patience's aid
أَسَيفَO Sayf (Sword of) الدَولَةِal-Dawla (the State) اِستَنجِدseek aid بِصَبرٍin patience

O Sayf al-Dawla, seek aid in patience;
But who can match your patience, O mountain
Yet how could the mountains have patience like yours?
You teach people to offer solace
فَأَنتَfor you تُعَلِّمُteach الناسَpeople التَعَزّيtaking consolation
وَخَوضَand wading into المَوتِdeath فيin الحَربِwar السِجالِof alternating fortunes
For you teach people to find consolation
And face death's swordplay undismayed
And to wade into death in war of shifting fortunes.
Variable is time's every state

وَحالُكَand your state واحِدٌone فيin كُلِّevery حالِcondition
The circumstances time brings upon you are varied,
While yours is one in any fate
Yet your state is the same in every circumstance.
Your sea was never stirred, O stalwart one

May your seas never be depleted, O ever-brimming one,
By oddities and things unforeseen
Despite strange camels' second draughts and repeated admissions to drink.
I saw you among those I see as kings
رَأَيتُكَI saw you فيamong الَّذينَthose whom أَرىI deem مُلوكاًkings

كَأَنَّكَas though you are مُستَقيمٌsomething sound فيamid مُحالِabsurdity
I have seen you among those whom I deem kings,
As if sound in the madhouse confined
As though you were sound reason amid absurdity.
If people lose their minds while you are sane
فَإِنfor if تَفُقِyou surpass الأَنامَhumankind وَأَنتَwhile you are مِنهُمone of them

For if you surpass humankind, though you are one of them,
Musk is but extract of the gazelle's blood
Then musk is a portion of the gazelle's blood.
