بَقِيَّةُthe remnant قَومٍof a people آذَنواthey showed signs بِبَوارِof ruin
وَأَنضاءُand worn-out ones أَسفارٍof journeys كَشَربِlike drinkers عُقارِof wine
We are the remnant of a people showing signs of ruin,
The remnant of a people who announced ruin
A remnant of a folk who have signaled their own demise,
And men worn thin by journeys, like drinkers of wine.
And the brightness of journeys like the drinking of medicine
Worn gaunt by travel, like those drunk on vintage wine.
نَزَلناwe lodged عَلىunder حُكمِthe rule الرِياحِof the winds بِمَسجِدٍin a mosque
عَلَيناupon us لَهاbelonging to them ثَوباًtwo robes حَصىًof pebbles وَغُبارِand dust
We lodged in a mosque at the mercy of the winds;
We descended upon the rule of the winds in a mosque
We halted at the mercy of the winds within a mosque,
Over us lay their two robes of pebbles and dust.
Upon us it had a garment of pebbles and dust
Clothed by the gale in a tunic of gravel and dust.
خَليلَيَّmy two friends ماnot هَذاthis مُناخاًa resting place لِمِثلِناfor the likes of us
فَشُدّاso you two tighten the saddles عَلَيهاon them وَاِرحَلاand you two depart بِنَهارِby daylight
My two friends, this is no resting place for the likes of us;
My two friends this is not a dwelling for our likes
O my two friends, this is no campsite for our kind,
So tighten the saddles on them, and depart by daylight.
So pack up and depart by daylight
So saddle the mounts and depart by the light of day.
وَلاand do not تُنكِراyou two find strange عَصفَthe blast الرِياحِof the winds فَإِنَّهاfor they are
قِرىhospitality كُلِّfor every ضَيفٍguest باتَwho spent the night عِندَwith سِوارِSiwar
And do not find the winds’ blast strange, for they are
And do not deny the blowing of the winds for it
And do not denounce the violent blowing of the storm,
The hospitality offered to every guest who spends the night with Siwar.
Is the lodging of every guest who spent the night at encampments
For it is the feast of every guest who lodges with Siwar.
