لِهَذاfor this اليَومِthe day بَعدَafter غَدٍtomorrow أَريجٍa fragrance
وَنارٌand a fire فيamong العَدوِّthe enemy لَهاit has أَجيجُa blazing roar
This day will have a fragrance beyond tomorrow,
For this day after tomorrow's fragrant dawn
For this day, the morrow holds a fragrance sweet,
and a fire among the enemy, with a fierce roar.
And a fire against the enemy with loud crackling
And against the foe, a fire that wildly roars;
تَبيتُpass the night بِهاthrough it الحَواصِنُthe chaste women آمِناتٍsecure
وَتَسلَمُand are safe فيin مَسالِكِهاits paths الحَجيجُthe pilgrims
Through it, chaste women pass the night secure,
In which the castles spend the night secure
Under its guard, chaste women sleep secure,
and pilgrims are safe along its paths.
And on its roads the pilgrims travel safely
And pilgrims travel safe along their paths.
فَلاso may never زالَتcease to be عُداتُكَyour enemies حَيثُwherever كانَتthey are
فَرائِسَprey أَيُّهاO الأَسَدُthe lion المَهيجُroused
So may your enemies, wherever they are, forever remain
So your enemies remain wherever they were
May your enemies remain forever as they were,
prey, O roused lion!
O lion terrifying in your rage
Mere prey, O Lion roused to raging wrath!
عَرَفتُكَI recognized you وَالصُفوفُwhile the ranks مُعَبَّآتٌarrayed for battle
وَأَنتَand you بِغَيرِon anything other than سَيفِكَyour sword لاnot تَعيجُyou rely
I recognized you while the ranks were arrayed,
I knew you though the ranks were in disarray
I knew you when the battle ranks were marshaled,
and you rely on nothing but your sword.
And without your sword you would not engage
And on naught but your sword you would rely.
وَوَجهُand the face البَحرِof the sea يُعرَفُis recognized مِنfrom بَعيدٍfar away
إِذاwhen يَسجوit lies calm فَكَيفَthen how much more إِذاwhen يَموجُit surges
And the sea's face is recognized from afar,
The sea's face can be known from afar
The ocean's face is recognized from afar,
when it lies calm—how much more when it surges!
If it is rippling, how much more if it enrages?
Even when still—how then when it storms?
بِأَرضٍin a land تَهلِكُvanish الأَشواطُthe galloping runs فيهاin it
إِذاwhen مُلِئَتare filled مِنَwith الرَكضِgalloping الفُروجُthe gaps
In a land where galloping runs vanish,
In a land where leagues are destroyed
In a land where galloping steeds are spent,
when the gaps are filled with galloping.
When the steeds fully race in exertion
When every breach is filled with headlong flight,
تُحاوِلُyou seek نَفسَthe life مَلكِof the king الرومِof the Romans فيهاthere
فَتَفديهِso they ransom him رَعِيَّتُهُhis subjects العُلوجُthe barbarians
There you seek the life of the king of the Romans,
It tries the soul of Rome's king therein
You seek therein the Roman Monarch's life,
so his barbarian subjects ransom him.
So his wretched subjects ransom him
While his barbarian hordes are slain to ransom him.
أَبِالغَمَراتِwith battle's perils? توعِدُناthreaten us النَصارىthe Christians
وَنَحنُwhile we نُجومُهاtheir stars وَهِيَand they are البُروجُthe constellations
Do the Christians threaten us with battle's perils,
Do the Christians threaten us with raids?
Do the Christians threaten us with tides of war,
while we are the stars of those perils, and they are the constellations?
While we are its stars and it is the mansions
When we are the stars, and they the zodiac signs?
وَفيناand among us السَيفُthe Sword حَملَتُهُhis charge صَدوقٌtrue
إِذاwhen لاقىhe engages وَغارَتُهُand his raid لَجوجُrelentless
And among us is the Sword, whose charge is true
Among us is the sword whose scabbard is true
Among us is the Sword whose strike rings true,
when he meets the foe, and whose raid is relentless.
If it meets in battle, its sharpness rages
When he meets the foe, persistent in his raid.
نُعَوِّذُهُwe invoke protection for him مِنَagainst الأَعيانِevil eyes بَأساًmartial prowess
وَيَكثُرُand swells بِالدُعاءِwith prayers لَهُfor him الضَجيجُthe clamor
We invoke protection for his prowess against evil eyes,
We invoke blessings upon it against the chiefs' evil
We shield him with charms against the envious eye,
and the clamor of prayers for him swells.
And many pray loudly for it
As the clamor of prayers for him grows loud.
رَضيناwe are content وَالدُمُستُقُwhile the Domestikos غَيرُnot راضٍcontent
بِماwith what حَكَمَhave decreed القَواضِبُthe cleaving swords وَالوَشيجُand the interlaced spears
We are content—though the Domestikos is not—
We approved while the bloodshedder disapproved
We are content, though the Domesticus is not,
with what the cleaving swords and interlaced spears have decreed.
Of what the ships and commander decided
With the judgment passed by sharp blades and spears.
فَإِنso if يُقدِمhe advances فَقَدthen already زُرناwe have visited سَمَندوSamandu
وَإِنand if يُحجِمhe holds back فَمَوعِدُهُthen his rendezvous الخَليجُthe Gulf
So if he advances, we have already visited Samandu;
If he advances, Samanduo we have visited
If he advances, then we have visited Samandu;
and if he holds back, his rendezvous is the Gulf.
And if he holds back, his fate is the Gulf
And if he recoils, our rendezvous is the Gulf.
