قالواthey said لَناto us ماتَhas died إِسحاقُIshaq فَقُلتُso I said لَهُمto them
هَذاthis الدَواءُthe remedy الَّذيthat يَشفيcures مِنَof الحُمُقِfoolishness
They told us, “Ishaq has died,” so I said to them:
They said to us Isaac died so I said to them
They told us that Ishaq had died, so I answered them,
“This is the remedy that cures foolishness.”
This is the remedy that cures folly
"This is the medicine that cures the disease of folly."
إِنif ماتَhe died ماتَhe died بِلاwithout فَقدٍloss وَلاnor أَسَفٍregret
أَوor عاشَhe lived عاشَhe lived بِلاwithout خَلقٍphysical form وَلاnor خُلُقِcharacter
If he died, he died without loss or regret;
If he died he died without loss or regret
If he has died, he died unwept and unmissed,
Or if he lived, he lived without looks or character.
Or if he lived he lived without morals or manners
And if he lives, he lives without character or soul.

خَونَbetraying الصَديقِthe friend وَدَسَّand concealing الغَدرِtreachery فيin المَلَقِflattery
A slave who split his skull had learned from him
From him a slave learned to hold his head high
From him, the slave who split his skull had learned
To betray a friend and hide treachery in flattery,
Betrayed a friend and slipped treachery into intimacy
To betray a friend and hide treason in flattery,
وَحَلفَand swearing أَلفِa thousand يَمينٍoath غَيرَnot صادِقَةٍtruthful

And to swear a thousand untruthful oaths,
And swore a thousand dishonest oaths
And to swear a thousand oaths, not one of them true,
Driven forth in sequence, like the joints of a spear.
Cast off like spear tips in battle
Running on in succession like the joints of a spear.
ماnot زِلتُI have ceased أَعرِفُهُI know him قِرداًa monkey بِلاwithout ذَنَبٍa tail
صِفراًdevoid مِنَof البَأسِcourage مَملوءًاfilled مِنَwith النَزَقِrecklessness
I have always known him as a monkey without a tail,
I've always known him to be an ape without a tail
I have ever known him as an ape without a tail,
Devoid of courage, filled with recklessness,
Empty of valor, full of greed
Void of all courage, yet brimming with rashness.
كَريشَةٍlike a feather بِمَهَبِّin the path of الريحِthe wind ساقِطَةٍfallen
لاnot تَستَقِرُّit settles عَلىin حالٍa state مِنَbecause of القَلَقِrestlessness
Like a feather fallen in the wind’s path,
Like a feather in the wind, falling
Like a feather falling in the path of the wind,
Never settling in one state because of its restlessness.
Never settling in one state of restlessness
Never settling, trembling with constant unease.
تَستَغرِقُencompasses الكَفُّthe palm فَودَيهِboth his temples وَمَنكِبَهُand his shoulder
وَتَكتَسيand it takes on مِنهُfrom him ريحَthe smell of الجَورَبِthe sock العَرِقِsweaty
A palm covers both his temples and his shoulder,
His palms engulf his cheeks, and his shoulders
A single hand could engulf his temples and shoulder,
And takes on from him the smell of a sweaty sock.
Cloaked in the stench of his sweaty socks
And catch from him the scent of a reeking, sweat-soaked sock.
فَسائِلواso ask قاتِليهِhis killers كَيفَhow ماتَhe died لَهُمfor them
مَوتاًa death مِنَfrom الضَربِblows أَوor مَوتاًa death مِنَfrom الفَرَقِfright
So ask his killers how he died at their hands:
So ask his murderers how he died for them
So ask of his killers exactly how he died for them:
A death from blows, or a death from fright?
Whether by blows or ripped limb from limb
Was it death by the blow, or death from sheer terror?
وَأَينَand where مَوقِعُthe point of impact حَدِّthe edge of السَيفِthe sword مِنon شَبَحٍa figure
بِغَيرِwithout رَأسٍa head وَلاnor جِسمٍa body وَلاnor عُنُقِa neck
And where could a sword’s edge strike a figure
And where the sword struck that specter
For where could the edge of a sword strike a phantom
With no head, no body, and no neck?
With neither head nor body nor neck
Possessing no head, nor body, nor even a neck?

لَكانَthen he would be أَلأَمَthe basest طِفلٍinfant لُفَّwas wrapped فيin خِرَقِrags
Were it not for the vile, and some resemblance to them,
If not for villains and some resemblance
Were it not for base men and some semblance they share,
He would be the basest infant wrapped in rags.
He'd be an infant wrapped in rags
He would be the vilest infant ever wrapped in rags.

The speech and appearance of most people you meet
His talk bothered many who saw him
The words and the looks of most people you meet
Are among the things that hurt the ears and eyes.
Grating on ears and eyes alike
Are a torture that grates on the ears and the eyes.
