المَجلِسانِthe two seats عَلىdespite التَميِيزِthe distinction بَينَهُماbetween them both
المَجلِسانِ عَلى التَميِيزِ بَينَهُما
مُقابِلانِfacing each other وَلَكِنbut أَحسَناboth showed excellence in الأَدَباmanners
مُقابِلانِ وَلَكِن أَحسَنا الأَدَبا
The two seats, though distinct from one another,
The two councils are unable to distinguish between them
The two seats, though distinct in their degree,
face each other, yet both have shown good manners.
Though opposites, both are well-mannered
Stand face to face, yet show such courtesy.
إِذاwhen صَعِدتَyou ascended إِلىto ذاthis one مالَleaned ذاthis one رَهَباًin fear
إِذا صَعِدتَ إِلى ذا مالَ ذا رَهَباً
وَإِنand if صَعِدتَyou ascended إِلىto ذاthis one مالَleaned ذاthis one رَهَباin fear
وَإِن صَعِدتَ إِلى ذا مالَ ذا رَهَبا
When you ascend to this one, that one leans in fear;
If you ascend to one with wealth and awe
If you ascend to this, that leans in awe,
and if you ascend to that one, this one leans in fear.
And if you ascend to one with wealth and awe
And if you ascend to that, this leans in awe.
فَلِمso why يَهابُكَfears you مالاwhat has no حِسَّfeeling يَردَعُهُrestrains it
فَلِم يَهابُكَ مالا حِسَّ يَردَعُهُ
إِنّيindeed I لَأُنصِرُI indeed aid (as written) مِنfrom شَأنَيهِماtheir two conditions عَجَباa marvel
إِنّي لَأُنصِرُ مِن شَأنَيهِما عَجَبا
Why, then, does what has no feeling to restrain it fear you?
Why would wealth, whose owner it restrains, frighten you?
Why does the senseless fear you, void of sense?
Indeed, I aid a marvel arising from their two conditions.
Truly, I am amazed by the state of them both
I see within their states a marvel immense.
