يَغدوcomes in the morning عليَّto me منَfrom النُهىintellect; wisdom ماthat which لمdid not يَرُحْcome in the evening
The fire of eloquence [probable reading] is kindled from my tongue.
The fire of passion blazes from my tongue
The fire of insight is kindled from my tongue,
Each morning brings me wisdom that had not come the evening before.
Morning brings reproaches unknown before
And from the mind comes wisdom that never departs,
بحرٌa sea لوif اغتُرِفَتwere scooped up لطائمbuffeting blows موجهits waves
بالأرضwith the earth والسبعand the seven الطباقlayered one above another لماwould not نُزحْbe drained
I am a sea: were its crashing waves scooped up
A sea whose gentle waves if drawn and sipped
A sea—were the surging breakers of its waves scooped up
with the earth and the seven layered heavens, it would not be drained.
Would overflow the seven earths full store
By the earth and the seven heavens, it would not run dry,
أمرىmy affair إليّup to me فإنso if سمحتُI gave freely بمهجَةٍwith a life
كرُمَتwas precious عليّto me فإنّthen indeed مثليone like me مَنone who سمَحْgave generously
My fate is mine to decide; if I give up a life
My affair is mine; if I accept reproach
My will is my own; so if I freely grant a soul
dear to me, then one like me is truly generous.
Blame me not; my like is ever free
That I held dear—well, one like me is he who gives.
