جودِ يَدَيهِ بِالعَينِ وَالوَرَقِ
Some people blamed Abu al-Asha'ir for
People blamed the generous chief of a tribe
Critics cast blame upon Abu al-Asha'ir for
the generosity of his hands with gold and silver.
For his openhandedness with wealth and leaves.
The bounty of his hands with gold and silver coin.
وَإِنَّماand only قيلَit was said لِمwhy خُلِقتَyou were created كَذاthus
وَإِنَّما قيلَ لِم خُلِقتَ كَذا
وَخالِقُand the creator of الخَلقِbeings خالِقُthe creator of الخُلُقِcharacter
وَخالِقُ الخَلقِ خالِقُ الخُلُقِ
Yet all that was said was, 'Why were you created thus?'
But I said: "He was created generous,
Yet they effectively ask, "Why were you created thus?"
while the Creator of beings is the creator of character.
And the Creator of beings made their natures."
When the Maker of mankind is the Maker of the soul.

They said, 'Was his generosity not enough for him,
They said: "Has not his generosity sufficed
They said, "Did his benevolence not suffice him,
that he even built his house beside the roads?'
That he built his house blocking the roads?"
That he built his dwelling right upon the traveler's path?"
فَقُلتُso I said إِنَّindeed الفَتىthe young man شَجاعَتُهُhis courage

So I said: Indeed, the young man's courage
I replied: "A brave youth's courage
I replied: "Indeed, the courage of the noble youth
makes him see in miserliness the image of fear.
Makes him see in meanness the image of separation."
Reveals to him the face of panic within stinginess.

By striking the heads of armored warriors, he secured
By striking the thick-necked warriors he won
By striking the skulls of armored knights, he achieved
the gains they win through flattery.
The same gains they won by baseness and flattery.
The gains that others seek through fawning praise.

The sun has settled in the sky, yet
The sun has mounted the sky, and nothing
The sun has taken its residence within the sky,
its distance does not hide it from the eyes.
Can keep it from the eyes, however far.
Yet its great distance does not veil it from our sight.

Be a deep sea, O generosity, for
Be a refuge, O generous one, for your sword
Become a crushing deep, O Generosity, for truly
his sword has made him safe from drowning.
Has protected you from perishing.
His sword has surely saved him from the risk of drowning."
