في شُربِها وَكَفَت جَوابَ السائِلِ
Drinking in the prince’s company rebuked those who reproached me
The Prince's boon companions chide me for drinking,
Companionship with the Prince has rebuked my blamers,
for drinking it, and was answer enough for the questioner.
and deny my petition though I implore.
Sufficing—in that draught—to answer those who ask.
مَطَرَتrained سَحابُthe clouds يَدَيكَyour two hands رِيَّthirst-quenching جَوانِحيmy heart

وَحَمَلتُand I bore شُكرَكَgratitude toward you وَاِصطِناعُكَand your patronage حامِليbearing me
وَحَمَلتُ شُكرَكَ وَاِصطِناعُكَ حامِلي
The clouds of your hands rained enough to quench my heart;
The rainclouds of your hands have watered my heart's garden -
The clouds of your hands have rained relief upon my thirsting heart,
and I bore gratitude toward you, while your patronage bears me.
I bear your thanks, believing your favor will sustain me.
I carry the weight of gratitude, while your benevolence carries me.
فَمَتىso when أَقومُI do justice بِشُكرِto gratitude for ماwhat أَولَيتَنيyou bestowed on me
فَمَتى أَقومُ بِشُكرِ ما أَولَيتَني
وَالقَولُand speaking فيكَof you عُلُوُّthe elevation of قَدرِthe rank of القائِلِthe speaker
وَالقَولُ فيكَ عُلُوُّ قَدرِ القائِلِ
So when can I give due thanks for what you have bestowed on me,
When can I give due thanks for your great gifts to me?
So when can I fulfill the thanks for all that you have granted,
while speaking of you elevates the speaker’s rank?
No words can tell your worth - you stand above all praise.
Since words in your praise but raise the speaker's rank?
