لاmay … never عَدِمَbe without المُشَيِّعَthe one seeing someone off المُشَيَّعُthe one being seen off
لَيتَif only الرِياحَthe winds صَنَّعٌskilled ماwhat تَصنَعُyou do
May the one being seen off never be without his escort.
May the traveler never lack the friend who bids farewell,
If only the winds were skilled at what you do!
Would that the winds were skilled like you in what they do,
بَكَرنَthey came early ضَرّاbringing harm وَبَكَرتَand you came early تَنفَعُyou bring benefit
وَسَجسَجٌand a gentle breeze أَنتَyou وَهُنَّand they زَعزَعُviolent gales
They came early bringing harm, while you came early bringing benefit.
They rose at dawn to injure, while you rose up to heal,
And you are a gentle breeze, while they are violent gales.
You are a gentle, soothing breeze, while they are violent gales,
وَواحِدٌand one أَنتَyou وَهُنَّand they أَربَعُfour
وَأَنتَand you نَبعٌa nabʿ tree (hardwood used for bows) وَالمُلوكُand the kings خِروَعُcastor plants
And you are one, while they are four.
And you are one alone, while they are four in all,
And you are a nabʿ tree, while kings are castor plants.
You are the solid bow-wood, while kings are hollow stalks.
