Are you departing, O heart, with the one who departed?

Then I mourn two beloveds—my very soul.

And why should I not be stricken, when the war of al-Basu—

—s rages between my eyelids and slumber?

And am I still alive after you,

when you have parted from me and my solace has departed?

May the full moon of night be a ransom for that face,

and the bough’s swaying for that sway.

Then what does parting have against togetherness,

and what do the winds have against the traces of camps?

As though he had never been, after having been mine,

just as he was mine after not having been.

And as though he had not given me wine to drink, mixed

with water from the gums, not water from rainclouds.

In his palm it has the color of his cheeks,

and your fragrance, O Ahmad son of al-Hasan.

Did the nobility of Ya‘rub not find you

already a marvel among the people of this age?

As though the perfections grew jealous over you,

and unsheathed before you the swords of strife.

Indeed, the mention of you is more fragrant than their scent,

and praise of you is the sweetest thing the ear can hear.

So whenever people saw you, they had no need,

thanks to the sight of you, to ask, ‘Whose son is this?’

And if even a child of Tayy were sought out,

his petitioner would share in the milk.

So the only sea on land is your bounty,

and the only people of valor are those of Yemen.
