وحبيب أخفَوه منّى نهاراً

فتخَفّى وزارني في اكتِئامِ

And a beloved whom they hid from me by day

A lover they hid from me by day

A beloved whom they hid from me by day,

then concealed himself and visited me in secret.

So he hid, and visited me in the dark of night

So he disguised himself to visit in the gloom;

زارني في الظلام يطلب ستراً

فافتَضحنا بنورهِ في الظلامِ

He visited me in the darkness, seeking concealment;

He visited me in the darkness, seeking cover

He visited in darkness, seeking a covering veil,

so we were exposed by his light in the darkness.

But we were exposed by his light in the darkness

But his light exposed us amidst the darkness.
