O mounts of my loved ones, the tears

pound my cheeks as you pound the soft pebbles.

So recognize those whom separation has set upon you,

and walk gently, submissive to the reins.

Modesty once kept me from weeping,

but today weeping prevents it from restraining me,

until each bone seems to have a wail

within its skin, and every vein a tear duct.

She who puts the young gazelle to shame is enough to expose

her lover; and this downfall of mine is downfall enough.

She unveiled, but parting veiled her with a yellow pallor

that covered her eye sockets, though it was no veil.

So, with tears dripping over her, she seemed

like gold inlaid with two strands of pearls.

She uncovered three tresses of her hair

one night, and thus revealed four nights.

She faced the moon in the sky with her face,

thus showing me the two moons together at once.

Restore our union! May a rain cloud water your ruined dwellings—

one that, if union with you were like it, would never clear away.

Thundering, it shows you the sky as fire, and the open land

like a sea, and the slopes as a lush meadow,

like the fingers of lavish Abd al-Wahid, who

quenches thirst, grants safety to whom he wills, and strikes fear.

He has been accustomed to noble conduct since childhood, as though

he had been given milk mingled with it as a suckling child.

    فَاِعتادَها فَإِذا سَقَطنَ تَفَزَّعا

    His gifts were strung upon him as amulets;

he grew used to them, and whenever they fell, he took fright.

He made his benefactions like flashing swords,

and his lofty deeds like leveled lances,

smiling at his petitioners and revealing white teeth

whose gleams outshine the glittering lightning,

revealing to his enemies a might

whose shoulder would shake the sky if it brushed against it.

The resolute, the vigilant, the radiant, the learned, the

    perceptive, the unyielding, the openhanded, the awe-inspiring;

the writer, the deft, the orator, the giver, the

expert, the discerning, the distinguished, the eloquent.

A soul with Time's disposition, for Time

    destroys souls and scatters what it has gathered;

and a hand with a cloud's generosity, for a cloud

waters inhabited land and barren ground alike.

Forever he breaks apart a hoard of abundant wealth,

and heals the fractured union of noble deeds.

He thrills to give, with the quiver of an Indian-forged blade,

on the day of hope, as when you brandished it on the day of battle.

O giver of wealth, meeting you is the poor man's hope,

and his plea after prayer whenever he supplicates.

Hold back—though you compel no one—you have passed the limit,

and reached where the star is beneath you; so pause.

You have occupied, among noble deeds, stations

not one of which humankind or jinn has occupied.

You have gathered the excellence of both; no man has aspired

to it, nor has any man aspired even to aspire to it.

Fate has carried out what you desired, as though

it were yours: whenever you resolved upon something, it resolved likewise.

And rebellious Time obeyed you, as though it were

a slave who answered swiftly whenever you called.

Your glories devoured all other glories; back turned

the mounts of my praise, limping short of their reach.

And your glories ran the sun's course through its orbits,

crossing its setting-place and passing beyond its rising-place.

If this world were tied to another like it,

they would encompass it, yet fear you would not be content.

So when could one who claims more than this for you be called a liar,

when God bears witness that what he claims is true?

And when could any speaker fully describe your state,

when he has kept so little beside all he has let slip?

If a youth must be like this to be called

a man, then call all other people, every one, a finger.

If no noble man strives for generosity

except like this, then rain is the stingiest of all who strive.

Al-Abbas has left behind your radiant self, his son,

for us to behold, and to hear of until the Resurrection.
