وَغَيرَكَand anyone but you صارِماًas a keen sword ثَلَمَnotched الضِرابُthe blows
With any shepherd but you, the wolves run wild;
Without your guarding shepherd's hand, the wolves ran wild in play,
And blows notch any keen sword but you.
And any sword but yours was blunt and useless in the fray.
وَتَملِكُand you possess أَنفُسَthe souls of الثَقَلَينِhumankind and jinn طُرّاًall together
فَكَيفَso how تَحوزُcan possess أَنفُسَهاits own souls كِلابُKilab
And you possess all the souls of humankind and jinn;
You hold dominion o'er the souls of men and jinn alike,
How, then, can Kilab possess its own?
How then could wretches claim their souls against your strike?
وَماand not تَرَكوكَthey deserted you مَعصِيَةًin disobedience وَلَكِنbut

يُعافُis shunned الوِردُthe watering place وَالمَوتُwhile death الشَرابُthe drink
They did not desert you in disobedience, but
They did not flee your presence out of rebel pride or hate,
The watering place is shunned when death is the drink.
But shunned the watering-place where death lay in the wait.
طَلَبتَهُمyou pursued them عَلىat الأَمواهِthe watering places حَتّىuntil

تَخَوَّفَfeared أَنthat تُفَتِّشَهُyou would search it السَحابُthe cloud
You pursued them at the watering places until
You chased them to the waters till the very clouds on high
The cloud feared that you would search it.
Feared you would search their rainy depths within the sky.
فَبِتُّso I passed the night لَيالِياًnights لاno نَومَsleep فيهاin them

So I passed nights with no sleep in them,
Sleepless nights you passed, while beneath your guiding rein,
As marked, purebred Arabian steeds trotted with you.
The branded noble chargers trotted 'cross the plain.
يَهُزُّsways الجَيشُthe army حَولَكَaround you جانِبَيهِits two flanks
كَماas نَفَضَتshook out جَناحَيهاits two wings العُقابُthe eagle
The army sways its two flanks around you,
Around you the army shakes its mighty flanks in span,
As an eagle shakes out its wings.
As a soaring eagle shakes its wings above the land.
وَتَسأَلُand you question عَنهُمُabout them الفَلَواتِthe wastelands حَتّىuntil

And you question the wastelands about them until
You questioned the wild wastelands of where the fugitives lay,
One answered you, and they themselves were the answer.
Until the waste replied, 'Here they are,' in dismay.
فَقاتَلَso fought عَنin defense of حَريمِهِمِtheir womenfolk وَفَرّواwhile they fled

نَدىthe bounty of كَفَّيكَyour two hands وَالنَسَبُand kinship القُرابُclose
So, while they fled, their womenfolk were defended
They fled, but your open hand and kinship's ancient ties
By the bounty of your hands and close kinship,
Fought to protect their women from the captor's eyes.
وَحِفظُكَand your regard for فيهِمِin them سَلَفيthe two forebears of مَعَدٍّMa'add

وَأَنَّهُمُand that they are العَشائِرُthe clansmen وَالصِحابُand companions
And your regard, in them, for Ma'add's two forebears,
Your care for Ma'add’s ancient line within their veins runs deep,
And their being clansmen and companions.
For they are comrades of your fold and kin you keep.
تُكَفكِفُyou hold back عَنهُمُfrom them صُمَّstout العَواليthe spears
وَقَدwhile already شَرِقَتchoked بِظُعنِهِمِwith their women's litters الشَعابُthe mountain passes
You hold the stout spears back from them,
You held back the deaf spears from striking them down dead,
While the mountain passes were choked with their women's litters.
When the narrow mountain passes choked with the train they led.
وَأُسقِطَتِand were miscarried الأَجِنَّةُthe fetuses فيinto الوَلاياthe saddlecloths
وَأُجهِضَتِand were miscarried الحَوائِلُthe female camel calves وَالسِقابُand the male camel calves
And fetuses were miscarried into the saddlecloths,
In the hurried litters, unborn babes were cast away,
And female and male camel calves were miscarried.
And pregnant camels aborted amidst the disarray.
وَعَمرٌand 'Amr فيon مَيامِنِهِمtheir right flanks عُمورٌ'Amr clans

وَكَعبٌand Ka'b فيon مَياسِرِهِمtheir left flanks كِعابُKa'b clans
And on their right stood 'Amr's many clans,
The tribe of 'Amr on their right fell to despair and flight,
And on their left, Ka'b's many clans.
And Ka'b upon the left were scattered in the night.
وَقَدand already خَذَلَتabandoned أَبوAbu بَكرٍBakr بَنيهاits sons

And Abu Bakr had abandoned its sons,
The clan of Abu Bakr forsook their own sons in the din,
And Qurayz and al-Dibab abandoned it.
As Qurayz and Al-Dibab betrayed their kith and kin.
إِذاwhen ماever (emphasis) سِرتَyou march فيin آثارِthe tracks of قَومٍa people
تَخاذَلَتِabandoned one another الجَماجِمُthe skulls وَالرِقابُand the necks
Whenever you march along a people's trail,
Whenever you march upon a people’s trace in chase,
Skulls and necks abandon one another.
Skulls bow down before you and necks fall in disgrace.
فَعُدنَso they returned كَماas أُخِذنَthey were taken مُكَرَّماتٍhonored

So they returned, honored as when they were taken,
Their women returned as they were taken, honored and secure,
With necklaces and perfume upon them.
Adorned with necklaces and scents, their dignity kept pure.
يُثِبنَكَthey repay you بِالَّذيfor what أَولَيتَyou bestowed شُكراًthanks

وَأَينَand where مِنَbeside الَّذيwhat توليyou bestow الثَوابُthe recompense
They repay you with thanks for what you bestowed;
They offer thanks for the grace your mercy did bestow,
Yet what is recompense beside what you bestow?
But how can mere thanks match the life-debt that they owe?
وَلَيسَand is not مَصيرُهُنَّtheir coming إِلَيكَto you شَيناًa disgrace

And their coming to you is no disgrace,
No shame befalls them in their destined fate with you,
Nor is there shame in their safekeeping with you.
Nor in your keeping of them is there fault to rue.
وَلاnor فيin فَقدِهِنَّtheir losing بَنيthe sons of كِلابٍKilab

إِذاwhen أَبصَرنَthey behold غُرَّتَكَyour radiant brow اِغتِرابُestrangement
Nor, though they are parted from Banu Kilab,
Nor is it exile for them to lose the Kilab clan,
Do they feel estranged when they behold your radiant brow.
If they but gaze upon the brightness of your face, O man.
وَكَيفَand how يَتِمُّis complete بَأسُكَyour might فيagainst أُناسٍpeople

How can your might be fully wielded against people
How can your might find fullness in a crushing blow
Whom you strike, when their injury pains you?
Against a kin whose pain makes your own tears flow?
تَرَفَّقbe gentle أَيُّهاO المَولىmaster عَلَيهِمwith them

فَإِنَّfor indeed الرِفقَgentleness بِالجانيtoward the offender عِتابُa rebuke
Be gentle with them, O master,
Be gentle, O Master, as you hold the command,
For gentleness toward the offender is a rebuke.
For mercy to the sinner is the sharpest reprimand.
وَإِنَّهُمُand indeed they عَبيدُكَyour slaves حَيثُwherever كانواthey are

And they are your slaves wherever they may be;
They remain your servants wherever they reside,
When you summon them for a crisis, they respond.
Ready to answer when you call to battle at your side.
وَعَينُand the very ones المُخطِئينَwho erred هُمُthey وَلَيسواand they are not

They are the very ones who erred, yet they are not
They are the very essence of those who err, 'tis true,
The first people to err and then repent.
Yet not the first to sin and then their vows renew.
وَأَنتَand you حَياتُهُمtheir life غَضِبَتgrew angry عَلَيهِمwith them

وَهَجرُand the forsaking by حَياتِهِمtheir life لَهُمُfor them عِقابُpunishment
And you, their life, have grown angry with them;
You are their life, though anger clouds your brow today,
And their life's forsaking them is punishment for them.
To sever them from life is punishment enough to pay.
وَماand not جَهِلَتwas ignorant of أَيادِيَكَyour favors البَواديthe desert folk

The desert folk were not unaware of your favors,
The desert tribes know well the favors of your hand,
But sometimes the right course is hidden.
Though sometimes truth is hidden in the shifting sand.
وَكَمand many a ذَنبٍsin مُوَلِّدُهُits begetter دَلالٌoverfamiliarity

وَكَمand many a بُعدٍestrangement مُوَلِّدُهُits begetter اِقتِرابُcloseness
And many a sin is born of overfamiliarity,
How many sins are born of love's excess and pride,
And many an estrangement is born of closeness.
And distance bred from standing too close to the side.
وَجُرمٍand a crime جَرَّهُbrought it about سُفَهاءُthe fools of قَومٍa people

And many a crime was brought on by a people's fools,
A crime the foolish of the tribe drew down in hate,
While punishment fell on someone other than its perpetrator.
While punishment on the innocent fell with heavy weight.
فَإِنso if هابواthey feared بِجُرمِهِمِbecause of their crime عَلِيّاً'Ali

If their crime makes them fear 'Ali,
If in their guilt they hold Ali in trembling fear,
One who fears him may yet hope in 'Ali.
It is Ali whom the fearful hope for when he's near.
وَإِنand even if يَكُhe is سَيفَthe sword of دَولَةِthe state of غَيرِsomeone other than قَيسٍQays

And though he is the Sword of a State not Qays's,
If he be Sword of State for other than Qays’ line,
From him come Qays's skins and garments.
Yet Qays's very skin and robes from him do shine.
وَتَحتَand beneath رَبابِهِhis clouds نَبَتواthey sprouted وَأَثّواand grew lush

And beneath his clouds they sprouted and grew lush,
Beneath his rain-clouds they have grown and thrived,
And in his days they multiplied and thrived.
And in his days, their goodness has revived.
وَتَحتَand beneath لِوائِهِhis banner ضَرَبواthey struck الأَعاديthe enemies

And beneath his banner they struck their enemies,
Beneath his banner they struck the foeman down,
And the defiant among the Arabs submitted to them.
And humbled Arab chiefs of high renown.
وَلَوand if غَيرُanyone other than الأَميرِthe prince غَزاraided كِلاباًKilab

Had anyone but the prince raided Kilab,
Had any but the Prince raided Kilab's lands,
Dibab—a mist—would have barred him from their suns.
A mist had veiled the sun of their fierce bands.
وَلاقىand he would meet دونَbefore reaching ثايِهِمِtheir encampment طِعاناًspear-thrusts

And before their encampment he would have met spear-thrusts
He would have met such thrusting at their gate,
Where the raven meets the wolf,
Where wolf and crow engage in deadly debate.

And horses that feed on the wind of the wastes,
And steeds that feed upon the desert air,
And for water, a mirage suffices them.
For whom the mirage serves as water there.
وَلَكِنbut رَبُّهُمtheir lord أَسرىmarched by night إِلَيهِمto them

فَماso not نَفَعَavailed الوُقوفُstanding firm وَلاnor الذَهابُflight
But their lord marched to them by night,
But it was their Lord who marched on them by night,
So neither standing firm nor flight availed them,
Availing naught was standing firm or flight.

Nor a night that hid them, nor day,
No night concealed them, nor the light of day,
Nor horses that carried them, nor riding camels.
No steed nor camel bore them safe away.
رَمَيتَهُمُyou assailed them بِبَحرٍwith a sea مِنof حَديدٍiron
لَهُit has فيon البَرِّdry land خَلفَهُمُbehind them عُبابُa surging swell
You hurled against them a sea of iron,
You cast against them a vast, iron sea,
Its billows surged behind them on dry land.
While waves of steel pursued them relentlessly.
فَمَسّاهُمso it reached them at dusk وَبُسطُهُمُwhile their carpets حَريرٌsilk

وَصَبَّحَهُمand it reached them at dawn وَبُسطُهُمُwhile their carpets تُرابُdust
It reached them at dusk, when their carpets were silk,
It struck at eve while on silk rugs they lay,
And reached them at dawn, when their carpets were dust.
And struck at dawn when on the dust they were prey.

And whoever among them held a spear in their hand
He who held a spear within his grip that day,
Was like whoever among them had henna on their hand.
Was weak as one with dyed hands raised in pray.
بَنوthe sons of قَتلىthose slain by أَبيكَyour father بِأَرضِin the land of نَجدٍNajd

وَمَنand whoever أَبقىhe spared وَأَبقَتهُand spared him الحِرابُwarfare
They are the sons of those your father slew in Najd,
Sons of those your father slew in Najd's domain,
And those he spared and warfare left alive.
And those whom spears had spared upon the plain.
عَفاhe pardoned عَنهُمthem وَأَعتَقَهُمand freed them صِغاراas children

He pardoned them and freed them as children,
He pardoned them and freed them when but small,
With scented necklaces round most of their necks.
With childhood amulets upon the necks of all.
وَكُلُّكُمُand each of you أَتىcame مَأتىthe way of أَبيهِhis father

And each of you has followed his father's course;
And each of you has trod his father's noble way,
So all the deeds of all of you are wondrous.
So wondrous are the deeds you both display.

Thus let whoever pursues his enemies march by night;
Thus let him march who seeks the foe to fight,
And let the pursuit be like your night march.
And let the chase be swift as was your night.
